Graduates Commissioning

Student Life
Our students, known as "Midshipmen" are full-time students at Northwestern University preparing to become officers in the Navy or Marine Corps. They enjoy all the benefits and responsibilities of other Northwestern students with the added advantage of belonging to our team. Because there is no restriction on choice of academic major, midshipmen are free to pursue a curriculum that interests them at one of the nation's most respected institutions of higher learning. Some of our current students are pursuing degrees in: Industrial Engineering, Journalism, Biology, Communications Studies, Decisions Sciences, Economics, and Psychology. Additionally, many midshipmen hold positions of leadership in multiple on-campus activities including fraternities, sororities, and clubs. The unit frequently participates in community service activities both on campus and in the cities of Evanston and Chicago.

Service Before Self
The combination of an undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and a commission in the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps gives you the opportunity to begin your professional career by serving your country. You will quickly learn how to challenge your personal limits while also discovering the uplift in strength and effectiveness that occurs when a military team focuses its attention on one target - forgetting individual differences while striving for a common goal. You will complete your obligated military service with the confidence and understanding of how to achieve extraordinary levels of team performance through the principles of leadership, the initiative of the subordinate, responsibility, and accountability that can provide you with the foundation necessary for a lifetime of accomplishment, integrity and respect.

Mentorship
Benevolence and mentorship are the hallmarks of exceptional military organizations. Outstanding military leaders find ways to create the conditions necessary for their subordinates to succeed rather than demanding success from their subordinates. All of us at Northwestern NROTC are responsible for supporting our students and future naval officers with the best possible counsel and available resources to ensure they develop the academic, moral, and social skills necessary for a lifetime of success.
