Benefits : Service before Self

"Any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, can respond with a great deal of pride and satisfaction, "I served in the United States Navy."

- President John F. Kennedy, 1963

"Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem."

- President Ronald Reagan, 1985

The combination of an undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and a commission in the United States Navy or Marine Corps gives you the opportunity and privilege to start your professional career by serving your country. You will quickly learn how to challenge yourself and apply the fundaments of teamwork. NROTC will help you develop the leadership skills necessary to complete your military service with confidence. You will understand how to achieve extraordinary levels of personal and team performance by utilizing the principles of leadership, the initiative of the subordinate, and being a responsible, accountable leader. "NROTC and the Navy are a test of what's inside you. The training can bring things out you never knew were in there, and further develop what you've already got," says a Second Class (Junior) Northwestern midshipman. As soon as you enter NROTC you will begin to understand the full meaning of the word leadership. Whether you're steaming around the Pacific for summer cruise or tacking a sailboat on Northwestern NROTC's sail team, you will be learning about leadership and serving your country at the same time. One Fourth Class (Freshman) Midshipman is excited to say, "NROTC lets you serve your country, be a leader, go to college and see the world, all at the same time!"

Northwestern NROTC is not simply an extracurricular activity. It is a program that will make your time in college a truly fulfilling experience. NROTC gives you the opportunity to serve your country, while you enjoy all the collegiate opportunities afforded by Northwestern.

A former Northwestern midshipman and current surface warfare Ensign says, "NROTC gave me the amazing opportunity to pay for college, get the most out of my education, and prepare myself for a career that would both enhance my personal character and provide me the opportunity to give back to my country."

"It won't be long before you are doing things you once only read about. You'll find yourself in situations and positions that demand performance on a scale that pushes you to your limits. You will also meet extraordinary people and lifetime friends," says a Marine Option Second Class Midshipman.

Northwestern NROTC midshipmen not only participate in many activities but they lead them. Many midshipmen have taken the leadership skills they developed in NROTC and gone on to become leaders in the organizations in which they participate. An NROTC midshipman and former Battalion Commander is a member of the Sigma Epsilon fraternity, and President of Northwestern's College Republicans. He decided to join NROTC, "to serve my country and get an education at one of the finest institutions in America. The development of Naval leaders must be more than military indoctrination, but should also include the ability to interact with peers who don't share your ideals and dreams. A Naval officer must be ready to adapt in any environment, and there is no better place to do so than on a liberal arts campus." Another NROTC Midshipman is President of the Kappa Delta sorority. She will tell you that NROTC has fostered her growth as a campus and sorority leader. "I am able to apply the leadership skills NROTC teaches me both in the NROTC program and in my extracurricular activities. I'm glad that the officers support us in finding leadership positions outside of NROTC. Being President of my sorority really gives me a chance to apply what I have learned about what makes a great leader: being dynamic, effective, and inspirational."

Northwestern NROTC midshipmen can be found on varsity and club sports teams like baseball, cross-country, and rugby.

Some members of our battalion are not only Northwestern students and NROTC midshipmen, but also varsity athletes. Pictured below is a midshipman who runs for Northwestern's varsity cross-country team. "I have dreamed of running in college since my first mile race when I was 10 years old. NROTC has allowed me to achieve this dream by encouraging my participation on Northwestern's Varsity Cross-Country team while still preparing me for a future of military service," she says. She chose NROTC, "because I felt that I had so many opportunities growing up. I owed something to the country that had given me these opportunities."

Northwestern midshipmen are utilizing the leadership skills they developed in NROTC and experiences in campus organizations to make a difference in their communities. Generosity and a sense of purpose accompany each midshipman as they seek to make positive changes to their campus and surrounding area. Since Northwestern is situated in Evanston, IL and is only a short ride away from downtown Chicago, countless opportunities to serve the greater community are available. Northwestern University's NROTC takes advantage of this by coordinating a Toys-for-Tots drive to benefit underprivileged children. Thousands of dollars have been raised to purchase toys for children who would otherwise have nothing over the holidays. In addition to this, midshipmen are involved in a myriad of philanthropic pursuits on campus. You will find Northwestern midshipmen in mentorship programs for at risk children, raising money for charitable organizations, or participating in religiously affiliated service projects.

Northwestern NROTC isn't simply about developing yourself; it encompasses the growth and development of your community and the country. Northwestern midshipmen see themselves as a part of a greater challenge to serve and better the United States as a whole. NROTC midshipmen feel the desire to give back to the country that has given them so many opportunities. What better way is there to serve your country and accomplish your academic goals than NROTC?
