Unit Staff
The staff at Northwestern NROTC is comprised of active duty Navy and Marine Corps officers and senior enlisted
personnel. Officers serve as professors of Naval Science courses and class advisors, while senior enlisted
personnel use their vast experience and knowledge to help your development as an officer. Our staff members
are committed to helping you reach your goals, both academic and military, in the United States Navy or
Marine Corps, offering personalized training, counseling, and advising at each step along the way, starting
the minute you contact us.
Commanding Officer
The Professor of Naval Science and Commanding Officer for the NROTC units at
Northwestern University and Illinois Institute of Technology. Born at NAS Lakehurst,
New Jersey, Captain Otis graduated from Michigan State University in December
1982, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He received
his commission through the Aviation Officer Candidate Program in June 1983.
Following initial pilot training and carrier qualifications onboard USS SARATOGA
(CV 60), Captain Otis was designated a Naval Aviator in May 1985. He then reported
to VAW-120 at NAS Norfolk, Virginia, for E-2C Fleet Readiness Training. In August
1986, he reported to VAW-121, where he served as Operations Flight Scheduler
and NATOPS Officer. During this tour he embarked on a Mediterranean deployment
onboard USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69). In September 1989 Captain Otis reported
to VAW-120 for instructor pilot duty. While attached to VAW-120 he served as
Operations Administrator and Aircraft Division Officer.
In June 1991 Captain Otis reported to the Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet
as the Aide and Flag Lieutenant to the Deputy and Chief of Staff. During this
tour he received his Masters Degree in Engineering Management from George Washington
University.
In August 1993 Captain Otis received orders to VAW-120 for refresher training.
Next, he reported to VAW-126 as the Safety Officer and then served as Maintenance
Officer during a Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf deployment onboard USS DWIGHT
D. EISENHOWER. During this deployment he qualified as Command Duty Officer Underway.
In August 1995 Captain Otis reported as the Operations Officer on the staff of
Carrier Air Group THREE, embarking on a deployment to the Mediterranean and Arabian
Gulf onboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71).
Captain Otis’ next assignment was the Operational Test and Evaluation
Force in Norfolk, Virginia, where he served as the Command, Control, Communications,
Computers and Information, (C4I) and Trainer Section Head, and as Test Director/Coordinator
for Maintenance Management Programs and Test Equipment.
In April 2000, Captain Otis reported as Executive Officer of the VAW-115
Liberty Bells stationed in Atsugi Japan and assumed Command in July 2001 until
August 2002. Selected to attend the Naval War College Captain Otis reported
to Newport Rhode Island in November 2002 and graduated with a Masters Degree
in Strategic
Decision Making, November 2003.
Captain Otis returned to Japan as the Operations Officer onboard the only
Forward Deployed Naval Aircraft Carrier, USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63) from April
2004 to May 2006. He was promoted to his current rank in August 2005. Following
his overseas tour Captain Otis was selected to the position of Professor of Naval
Science at the NROTC Chicago Consortium where he assumed
command in June 2006.
Captain Otis’ decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (3
Gold stars), Strike/Flight Air Medal (2), Navy Commendation Medal (2 Gold stars),
Navy Achievement Medal and various campaign and service ribbons.

The Executive Officer and Marine
Officer Instructor (MOI) is a Major in the United States Marine Corps,
and serves as an Assistant Professor
of Naval Science at
Northwestern
University
and Illinois Institute of Technology. He received his Bachelor of
Science in Civil Engineering from Illiniois Institute of Technology in 1997 and
earned a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Rhode Island
in 2002. He has deployed with 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, during peacetime operations
and, most recently, served two combat tours with 1st Force Reconnaissance Company
in support of Opereration Iraqi Freedom. He teaches NS 336 Evolution of Warfare
and NS 346 History of Amphibious Warfare.
The First and Third Class Midshipman Advisor
is a surface warfare officer with a nuclear power subspecialty, currently
serving as an Assistant Professor of Naval Science at Northwestern University.
A Navy Lieutenant, he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in mathematics from Marquette University. He earned his surface warfare qualification aboard the
guided missile frigate USS HAWES (FFG 53) where he served for twenty months
as the ship's Communications Officer. He then served his second tour aboard the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72) as the Reactor Propulsion Division Officer. He teaches NS
210 Marine Navigation and NS
331 Naval Operations.
The Second Class Midshipman Advisor is a Navy
Lieutenant and submarine officer. He currently serves as the Nuclear Power
Officer and Assistant Professor of Naval Science at Northwestern University
and Illinois Institute of Technology. He earned his Bachelor of Science
Degree in Industrial Engineering from Northwestern University. He served
as Assistant Engineer aboard
the Ohio-class submarine USS PENNSYLVANIA (SSBN 735)(BLUE) homeported in
Bangor, WA. He teaches NS
345 Naval Engineering and NS
220 Naval Ship Systems II (Naval Weapons Systems).
The Fourth Class Midshipman Advisor is a Navy
Lieutenant and naval flight officer. A graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering Systems and is currently
pursuing his Masters of Business Administration at Northwestern University's
Kellogg School of Management. After earning his wings, he was assigned to
fly the S-3B Viking and completed a combat
deployment aboard USS JOHN F KENNEDY (CV 67) followed by a joint deployment with special operations forces in Iraq. He teaches NS
110 Introduction to Naval Organization and NS
120 Seapower and Maritime Affairs.
The Unit Supply Officer is a Photographer's Mate
Senior Chief in the United States Navy. He provides logistic support and
training to Midshipmen, outfitting them with uniforms, books and Battalion
mission-orientated supplies. With over 20 years of experience, he provides
Naval tradition mentorship to all members of the unit. He has served onboard
the aircraft carriers USS NIMITZ, USS INDEPENDENCE, and USS JOHN C. STENNIS.
He was leading Chief of the Operations department on USS PELELIU and a member
of the "Jolly Rogers" and "Black Knights" F-14 fighter squadrons. He
has served and deployed from Norfolk, Virginia, Pensacola, Florida, Barbers
Point, Hawaii, San Diego, California, and Japan. Click on the icons below

The Assistant Marine Officer Instructor is a Staff Sergeant in the United States
Marine Corps and serves as the Assistant Battalion Advisor. With over 12 years
of experience, he has served as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor
at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California. He has also served in combat
in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM in Fallujah, Iraq in 2005 and Ar Ramadi,
Iraq in 2006. He is the Drill Team and Color Guard advisor.

CORTRAMID

CORTRAMID is conducted at shore training sites on the East and West Coasts of the U.S. (NU's schedule guarantees an assignment to the later West Coast session in San Diego!)
The training is intended to familiarize midshipmen with the missions, tasks, and equipment of the various warfare areas: Surface, Submarine, Aviation, and Marine Corps. Learn more!
