Unit Staff

The staff at Northwestern NROTC is comprised of active duty Navy and Marine Corps officers and senior enlisted personnel. Officers serve as professors of Naval Science courses and class advisors, while senior enlisted personnel use their vast experience and knowledge to help your development as an officer. Our staff members are committed to helping you reach your goals, both academic and military, in the United States Navy or Marine Corps, offering personalized training, counseling, and advising at each step along the way, starting the minute you contact us.

Captain Edward J. Martin, USN
Captain Martin is a native of Philadelphia and a graduate of Saint Joe's Prep and Fairfield University. He began his Navy career in 1981, graduating from Aviation Officer Candidate School and earning his commission as an Ensign, U.S. Navy. Captain Martin earned his wings in May 1982, completed the H-3 Fleet Replacement Pilot Syllabus and reported to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 1, Detachment 2 in Atsugi, Japan for his first fleet tour. While assigned to HC-1 Det 2 Captain Martin deployed aboard USS MIDWAY (CV-41) for multiple Western Pacific/Indian Ocean Cruises.


Following his assignment in Japan, Captain Martin reported to Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron Twelve at Naval Air Station Norfolk, Virginia where he transitioned to the CH-53E Super Stallion aircraft. He remained at HM-12 as a flight instructor and held numerous positions in the operations and maintenance departments.
In September 1987, Captain Martin reported to HC-4 at NAS Sigonella, Italy. While attached to HC-4, he served as Officer-in-Charge for detachments throughout the Mediterranean, from Rota, Spain to Tel Aviv, Israel. He also held the positions of Squadron Safety Officer and Squadron Administrative Officer.


Captain Martin left Italy and reported to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California where he earned a Masters of Science degree in Financial Management in June, 1992. He then reported to HC-2 at NAS Norfolk, Virginia for his department head tour. Deploying to Naples, Italy, he served as Officer-in-Charge of HC-2, DET-1 and embarked in USS BELKNAP (CG-26) to the Adriatic Sea in support of operations in Bosnia. He then deployed aboard USS MOUNT WHITNEY (LCC-2O), Flagship of the U.S. Second Fleet and NATO’s Striking Fleet Atlantic, for exercises in the North Atlantic Ocean. He completed his Department Head tour as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer.


Captain Martin then reported for duty in Washington, DC, as a Congressional Liaison Officer for the Navy's Office of Financial Management and Budgets in the Pentagon. His responsibilities led to daily trips to Capitol Hill where he met with the staffs of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees to coordinate the Navy’s annual budget submission.
Captain Martin was selected for Aviation Command in June 1995 and he reported to HC-2 as Executive Officer in March 1996. He took command of the “Fleet Angels” in September 1997.


Following his Command tour, Captain Martin reported to the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. After graduation he reported to Headquarters SACLANT, a NATO Strategic Command. There he served as a Policy Officer in the Political-Military Affairs and Cooperation Branch, focusing on NATO’s Partnership for Peace program. In July of 2003, Captain Martin left SACLANT and began a one-year Fellowship in National Security at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Upon the completion of his Fellowship in June 2004, he took command of U. S. Navy Support Facility Diego Garcia. Following his Major Shore Command tour, CAPT Martin became the U.S. Defense and Naval Attaché to Peru in July 2006. He spent two years in the Defense Attaché System working at the American Embassy in Lima. He then returned to the United States to take Command of the Naval ROTC Chicago Area Consortium. CAPT Martin currently holds this position. The Consortium includes Illinois Institute of Technology and Northwestern University, and a number of cross-town affiliate schools.

Commander Donald B. Lesh, USN

Commander Lesh is a December 1987 graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering and received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps. He was designated a Surface Warfare Officer in August of 1990.

His sea duty assignments span twelve years and include: Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer and Repair Officer in USS ANTIETAM (CG 54); Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group THREE; Engineer Officer in USS THORN (DD 988); Material and Logistics Officer for Commander, Destroyer Squadron EIGHTEEN; Auxiliaries and Electrical Officer in USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71); and Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Combat and Information Systems Officer (C5I) in USS NASSAU (LHA 4).

His shore assignments include the Naval Postgraduate School where he completed the requirements for a Master’s of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering; Air Command and Staff College where he completed phase one of his Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) and received a Master’s of Military Operational Art and Science; Joint Forces Staff College where he completed JPME phase two requirements; Naval Network Warfare Command as a Branch Head in the Enterprise Architecture (N6) and Requirements (N8) Directorates; and numerous billet specific training courses. He is currently assigned to the Chicago Consortium NROTC Programs as the Executive Officer and Associate Professor of Naval Science serving units at Illinois Institute of Technology and Northwestern University.

His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Navy Commendation Medal (five awards), and the Navy Achievement Medal. While deployed with the THEODORE ROOSEVELT (TR) Strike Group, he completed his surface command qualification and received the Surface Navy Association’s Admiral Arleigh Burke Surface Warfare Operational Excellence Award for his contributions that enabled TR to remain at sea for 159 consecutive days. He is authorized to wear numerous unit level ribbons including the Navy Unit Commendation (two awards), the Battle Efficiency Award (four awards), the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with four bronze stars, and numerous other campaign awards for deployments in support of Operations EARNEST WILL, DESERT SHIELD, NOBLE ANVIL, SHINING PRESENCE, ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM.

The Marine Officer Instructor (MOI) is a Major in the United States Marine Corps, and serves as an Assistant Professor of Naval Science at Northwestern University and Illinois Institute of Technology. He received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Illiniois Institute of Technology in 1997 and earned a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Rhode Island in 2002. He has deployed with 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, during peacetime operations and, most recently, served two combat tours with 1st Force Reconnaissance Company in support of Opereration Iraqi Freedom. He teaches NS 336 Evolution of Warfare and NS 346 History of Amphibious Warfare.

The First and Third Class Midshipman Advisor is a surface warfare officer, currently serving as an Assistant Professor of Naval Science at Northwestern University. A Navy Lieutenant, he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech. His initial sea-tour was as the Auxiliaries Officer on USS STETHEM (DDG 63) based in Yokosuka, Japan. Following his tour in Japan he was the Navigator on USS BARRY (DDG 52) based in Norfolk, VA. He teaches NS 210 Marine Navigation and NS 331 Naval Operations.

The Second Class Midshipman Advisor is a Navy Lieutenant and submarine officer. He currently serves as the Nuclear Power Officer and Assistant Professor of Naval Science at Northwestern University. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. He served as the Assistant Weapons Officer aboard the Virginia-class submarine USS VIRGINIA (SSN 774) home ported in Groton, CT. He also served a joint tour as the Training Officer for the Iraq Assistance Group in Baghdad, Iraq. He teaches NS 345 Naval Engineering and NS 220 Naval Ship Systems II (Naval Weapon Systems).

The Fourth Class Midshipman Advisor is a Navy Lieutenant and naval flight officer. A graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering Systems and is currently pursuing his Masters of Business Administration at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. After earning his wings, he was assigned to fly the S-3B Viking and completed a combat deployment aboard USS JOHN F KENNEDY (CV 67) followed by a joint deployment with special operations forces in Iraq. He teaches NS 110 Introduction to Naval Organization and NS 120 Seapower and Maritime Affairs.

The Unit Supply Officer is a Photographer's Mate Senior Chief in the United States Navy. He provides logistic support and training to Midshipmen, outfitting them with uniforms, books and Battalion mission-orientated supplies. With over 20 years of experience, he provides Naval tradition mentorship to all members of the unit. He has served onboard the aircraft carriers USS NIMITZ, USS INDEPENDENCE, and USS JOHN C. STENNIS. He was leading Chief of the Operations department on USS PELELIU and a member of the "Jolly Rogers" and "Black Knights" F-14 fighter squadrons. He has served and deployed from Norfolk, Virginia, Pensacola, Florida, Barbers Point, Hawaii, San Diego, California, and Japan. The Assistant Marine Officer Instructor is a Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and serves as the Assistant Battalion Advisor. With over 12 years of experience, he has served as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California. He has also served in combat in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM in Fallujah, Iraq in 2005 and Ar Ramadi, Iraq in 2006. He is the Drill Team and Color Guard advisor.

CORTRAMID



CORTRAMID is conducted at shore training sites on the East and West Coasts of the U.S. (NU's schedule guarantees an assignment to the later West Coast session in San Diego!)

The training is intended to familiarize midshipmen with the missions, tasks, and equipment of the various warfare areas: Surface, Submarine, Aviation, and Marine Corps. Learn more!
