HATE CRIMES AND BIAS INCIDENTS

REPORTING INCIDENTS

SITEMAP

After the hate crime and bias incidents occurred in the spring of 2003, Student Affairs staff immediately looked for ways to convey a positive message to all students, staff and faculty. The campaign began with buttons which were distributed widely across campus that said "No Place for Hate, Northwestern University." Signs for residence hall and office doors were designed and distributed. A series of workshops was held at the multi-cultural center to talk about the issues raised by the incidents.

Student leaders met with both the Vice President and Associate Vice president for Student Affairs. The results included the creation of this web site, a design and production of a brochure for use across campus, and the training of student affairs staff at a Stop the Hate workshop.

There will continue to be programming for students, staff and faculty to work on issues related to recognizing hate crimes and bias incidents and to assist everyone in coping with the problems that follow an incident.

Last May, the Student Affairs Department provided Staff Development training sessions on hate crimes and bias incidents. These sessions took place April 30th, May 7th, and at the Student Affairs Conference, June 25th. Please check in the near future for upcoming sessions.
