*IF YOU ARE THE TARGET OF A BIAS INCIDENT OR HATE CRIME OR IF YOU SEE AN INCIDENT, PLEASE REPORT TO UNIVERSITY POLICE AT 847.491.3254

What should students or student groups do if they believe they are the victim(s) of a bias-related incident or hate crime?

Regardless of when, where and how it occurs, students and/or student groups who are targets of bias incidents and/or hate crimes are encouraged to take the following action.
  1. Report the incident as soon as possible to the University Police. If medical attention is required, call 911 immediately. University Police will dispatch an officer to the location. If possible, any physical evidence related to the incident should not be touched or disturbed. The officer will document what happened, including where and when the incident occurred, the names of the victims, and names of witnesses, if any. All physical evidence of the incident will be retained and/or the evidence photographed.

After the University Police have collected the evidence, staff from University Housing and Food Service or Facilities Management will remove the graffiti and/or repair any damage to University property.

  2. Tell any staff member from Student Affairs, including University Residential Life (RAs and professional staff), African American Student Affairs, Hispanic/Latino Student Services, Asian/Asian American Student Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Campus Activities, the University Chaplain, or the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs. Staff members in the Division of Student Affairs will work closely with the students affected in determining how to respond to the incident.
