Law and Science as a Complex System of Embedded Complex Systems

Science generates and informs laws and legal institutions, and laws and legal institutions also structure the search for and understanding of scientific knowledge and the use of such knowledge. In some contexts, what is “science” and what is “law” is difficult to answer since the legal and scientific discourses are so fully intertwined and mutually-constituitive. This NICO groups focuses on three such contexts:

(1) litigation/dispute resolution and “scientific evidence”;
(2) law and medical research and medical treatment;
(3) law and environmental science.
