November 2011 Theatre/Dance Calendar

Two musicals and dance concert performances staged in November

EVANSTON, Ill. --- The hit Broadway musical “Rent” comes to the Evanston campus Nov. 4 to 20, as part of the 31st anniversary season of the Theatre and Interpretation Center (TIC) at Northwestern University.

The Imagine U Family Series continues through Nov. 6 with “A Year with Frog and Toad,” the Broadway all-ages woodland musical adventure based on the beloved books of Arnold Lobel.

Nov. 11 to 19, student dancers will perform the original works of Northwestern student choreographers during the Fall Dance Concert. The annual event is presented by the School of Communication’s dance program and New Movement Project (NMP), a student group advised by dance faculty member Molly Shanahan.

All events are open to the public and take place on Northwestern’s Evanston campus at the Ethel M. Barber Theater, 30 Arts Circle Drive; Cahn Auditorium, 600 Emerson St.; Mussetter-Struble Theater, 1949 Campus Drive; or the Marjorie Ward Marshall Dance Center, 10 Arts Circle Drive, as noted.

Subscriptions for the entire 2011-12 TIC Mainstage Season, National Theatre Live series, Imagine U Family Series and single tickets are now on sale through the TIC Box Office at (847) 491-7282 or www.tic.northwestern.edu. Single ticket prices are listed below. Where applicable, ticket discounts are available for groups of 8 or more.

For the first time, TIC Mainstage subscribers can choose between two different plans. The 8-Play Subscription for $75 to $154 represents a 20 percent savings off single ticket prices. The 5-Play Flex-Pass for $55 to $115 represents a 10 percent savings off single ticket prices. Both are now on sale. NOVEMBER 2011 MAINSTAGE PRODUCTIONS

“Rent,” music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, directed by Dominic Missimi, 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4; 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5; 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6; 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12; 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13; 8 p.m.  Thursday, Nov. 17; 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18; 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, at the Ethel M. Barber Theater. Inspired by Puccini’s opera “La Boheme,” “Rent” broke ground by focusing on a group of friends, drug use and the AIDS crisis. The Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical offers a heartrending and ultimately hopeful look at love and friendship in the face of illness. Post-show discussions with cast members will follow the Nov. 4 and Nov. 17 evening performances and the Nov. 6 matinee. This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. Single tickets are $10 to $25; tickets for groups of 8 or more are $8 to $22 each; $5 tickets are available exclusively to Northwestern students with valid IDs on advance ticket purchases only.

IMAGINE U FAMILY SERIES

“A Year with Frog and Toad,” book by Robert Reale, music and lyrics by Willie Reale, based on the books by Arnold Loebel, and directed by Northwestern student Sophie Rich, 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, Mussetter-Struble Theater. Frog and Toad aren’t perfect animals by any stretch of the imagination. They fight, they make mistakes and they sometimes let feelings get the better of them. But despite their differences, friendship always wins out. A heartwarming and joyous musical adapted from the children’s books of Arnold Loebel, “A Year with Frog and Toad” will delight children and parents alike. The program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. Imagine U programming is recommended for children aged 5 to 10. Single tickets are $10.

DANCE PROGRAM

Fall Dance Concert: “Expanding Approach,” 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11; 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12; 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17; 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18; and 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, in the Ballroom Studio of the Marjorie Ward Marshall Dance Center. The fall concert will showcase the works of nine Northwestern student choreographers selected by a panel of peers and dance faculty to create original and artistically mature work in two months’ time. Their works will be performed by an ensemble of 26 student dancers. Bleacher-style seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis. General admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children and full-time students with valid IDs. Tickets also will be sold at the door prior to each performance.
