Zelditch Named Jones Professor

Professor pioneered the mathematics field of quantum chaos

By Jasmine Rangel

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Steven Zelditch, professor of mathematics in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, has been named the Wayne and Elizabeth Jones Professor.

Zelditch has had more than 100 papers published. His research focuses on the mathematical underpinnings of quantum mechanics and its applications in geometry and probability. Zelditch’s primary areas of study are semiclassical analysis and spectral theory, and he has recently branched out into complex geometry. He was a pioneering scholar in quantum chaos, which has blossomed into a whole field of pure mathematics in which he remains a key figure.

He is highly sought as a presenter and frequently asked to review or summarize areas of mathematics at conferences and workshops. He has co-organized more than a dozen conferences and delivered nearly 50 presentations. Zelditch has served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Mathematics, the Annales Scientifiques de l’Ecole Normale Superieure, the Journal of Mathematical Physics and Communications in Mathematical Physics, Analysis & PDE and Communications in Mathematical Physics.

Zelditch joined the Northwestern faculty in 2010.
