Books By The Thousands And Then Some

Northwestern University Library holds its annual book sale in May

By Wendy Leopold

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Looking for William Shatner’s 1995 “ StarTrek Movie Memories” or the nine-volume “Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln?” You’ll find them along with thousands of CDs, videos, records and books at Northwestern University Library’s annual book sale.

Much anticipated by book enthusiasts and collectors, the sale in the Ver Steeg Lounge of Northwestern’s Main Library, 1970 Campus Drive, Evanston campus, opens to the public at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 12, and closes for the day at 4 p.m.

Northwestern community members with a valid WildCard or an alumni ID can shop the sale a day earlier -- from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11.

And everyone is welcome to take part in “Buck-a-Bag Day,” Friday, May 13. That’s when bargain seekers can fill up a bag with books, videos and records for $1 or a box for $2.

The event features Northwestern University Press overstock, some 200 VHS tapes (with an emphasis on opera and jazz) and especially good collections in African studies, Latin American studies, transportation and plays.

Until “Buck-a-Bag Day,” hardcover books cost $3 each; quality paperbacks $2; and mass-market paperbacks cost 50 cents each.

For more about the sale, call Betsy at (847) 491-2932.
