Lively Film and Northwestern Experts Demystify Menopause

CHICAGO --- Got questions about the evolving and sometimes confusing data on menopause? 

Get some answers Feb. 2 at a lively evening that includes a private screening of an entertaining documentary on menopause and a question-and-answer session with Northwestern Medicine physician experts.

The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, at the Thorne Auditorium, 375 E. Chicago Ave. on the Chicago campus of Northwestern University. The evening includes a wine reception with red boas and is a benefit for the Institute for Women’s Health Research at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

The film is “Hot Flash Havoc, A Film of Menopausal Proportions.” After the film, the audience will be able to ask questions of Northwestern experts in menopause and perimenopause.

The Institute for Women’s Health Research supports much needed research on health issues that affect women throughout their lifespan. The institute also funds the Illinois Women’s Health Registry, which provides a pool of potential study subjects for researchers to study diseases in both sexes as well as those specific to women. In the past, women often were excluded from clinical research. The registry hopes to overcome that with a ready bank of motivated and willing participants.

The experts include:

•Nemaha Dresner, M.D., associate professor of clinical psychiatry and of obstetrics/gynecology at Feinberg and a physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital

•Virginia Kaklamani, M.D., associate professor of hematology/oncology at Feinberg with a special interest in breast cancer, co-director of the cancer genetics program at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University and a physician at Northwestern Memorial

•Diana Kerwin, M.D., assistant professor of medicine, specializing in geriatrics and a physician at Northwestern Memorial 

•Vera Rigolin, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Feinberg and associate medical director of the Center for Women’s Cardiovascular Health at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute at Northwestern Memorial

•Lauren Streicher, M.D., assistant clinical professor of obstetrics/gynecology at Feinberg and a physician at Northwestern Memorial

•Alan Altman, M.D., president of the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health in Aspen, Co., and former assistant clinical professor at Harvard Medical School.
