Jianmin Qu Named Walter P. Murphy Professor


The department chair has published more than 110 papers in top journals

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Jianmin Qu, professor and chair of the department of civil and environmental engineering in the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern, has been named the Walter P. Murphy Professor.

Qu's research focuses on many areas of theoretical and applied mechanics, including micromechanics of composites, interfacial fracture and adhesion, fatigue and creep damage in solder alloys, defects and transport in crystalline solids, thermomechanical reliability of microelectronic packaging and ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation of advanced engineering materials. His research has been supported by government agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy and the Office of Naval Research.

Qu has published more than 110 refereed papers in the top journals of his field and co-authored "Fundamentals of Micromechanics of Solids" in 2006. He is the recipient of numerous teaching awards and distinctions, including an Outstanding Sustained Technical Contribution Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology Society in 2008 and the Sigma Xi Best Paper Award in 2007. Qu, a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), also received the ASME Outstanding Contribution Award in Electronic and Photonic Packaging in 2006.
