EVANSTON, Ill. --- Seasonal flu shots will be available to active or retired Northwestern faculty and staff and their family members this fall during the 2009 Health and Benefits Fair that will be held on the Evanston (Oct. 28) and Chicago (Oct. 29) campuses.

Students need to make appointments at the Health Service facilities in Evanston and Chicago to get seasonal flu shots.

The H1N1 vaccine has not yet been released. "We are working with the City of Evanston's Department of Health and Human Services in an effort to administer H1N1 shots to faculty, staff and students on the Evanston campus in mid-November," said Donald A. Misch, M.D., executive director of Northwestern's Evanston campus Health Service.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting the seasonal and H1N1 flu shots this year because the symptoms for both are very similar, Misch said, and both are dangerous.

Seasonal flu kills 36,000 individuals a year, he stressed.

Seasonal flu injections for active and retired staff and faculty and their family members will be administered by representatives of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois in Evanston from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the Armadillo Room (208) of Norris University Center, and in Chicago from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, in the Kabiller Room (the mezzanine area located above the seated "cafeteria" area) of the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center.

The price for a seasonal flu shot for employees is $25. Employees are requested to bring a valid WildCARD ID to the October Benefits Fair. Those who have their WildCARD ID with them will have the option of paying for their shot through payroll deduction; others must make payment on site with a personal check or exact cash.

Seasonal flu shots are available to Northwestern University students at the Evanston campus Health Service facility for a $25 charge. To make a required appointment, students should call (847) 491-2204.

In Chicago, the Health Service hours for student flu vaccinations are 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and the price is based on students' insurance plans.  Students should phone (312) 695-8630 for an appointment. (Students in Chicago who have made an appointment with a physician can request a flu shot during their medical visit.)
