Get Fit at Northwestern in May

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Northwestern University is celebrating National Physical Fitness and Sports month in May with a variety of events and programs for faculty and staff and the general public, many of them free of charge.

The primary goal of the observance is to encourage individuals to commit to 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least three days each week to help prevent chronic disease and promote healthier, longer lives. Participation in this celebration will help those involved to develop lifelong habits of regular physical activity.

May events or programs include the following:

•A $99 summer membership fee is available to new members.

• During a Massage Therapy special offered through June 15, those who purchase a 30- or 60-minute session will receive a 30- or 60-minute session at half-price.

• Registration is available for a free trial membership pass good for unrestricted use of fitness facilities, including the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion and Dellora A. and Lester J. Norris Aquatics Center, Patten Gymnasium and Blomquist Recreation Center. A valid WildCARD or photo ID is a requirement.

• Free healthy weight and blood pressure screenings: noon to 1 p.m. Friday, May 15 and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 16. A valid WildCARD is required.

• Free Food for Thought presentation will include a light lunch for those who attend "Staying on Track during Vacations" from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, May 27.

• Free Friday access to all group exercise classes as well as use of all fitness facilities for Northwestern faculty and staff will be available on the following Fridays: May 15, May 22 and May 29.

• Between 8 and 10 a.m. Friday, May 15, National Bike to Work Day, free bagels and juice will be available at the Sports and Aquatics Center, while supplies last, for those who bike to work.

• AthletiCo will provide free injury and flexibility screenings from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 27. Pre-registration is recommended.

• The Foot & Ankle Clinics of America will provide free foot screenings from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 20 and May 27. Pre-registration is recommended.

• Free posture/spinal screenings will be provided by Chiro One Wellness Centers from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 20 and Wednesday, May 27. Pre-registration not necessary. Walk-ups are encouraged.

• During National Employee Health and Fitness Day, Wednesday, May 20, there will be free access to fitness facilities and group exercise classes; free healthy weight and blood pressure screenings from 5 to 7 p.m.; free posture/spinal screenings by Chiro One Wellness Centers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m., and free foot screenings by the Foot & Ankle Clinics of America from 5 to 7 p.m.

• Active Older Adult Celebration Week, May 26 through 29, will include free access to all facilities and group exercise classes; free 15-minute Mini Assessments and refreshments from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, and Thursday, May 28. Pre-registration is encouraged. Free injury and flexibility screenings by AthletiCo from 4 to 7 p.m.; Free posture/spinal screenings by Chiro One Wellness Centers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Free foot screenings by the Foot & Ankle Clinics of America from 5 to 7 p.m. There also will be free access to PrimeTime Fitness classes from 7 to 8 a.m. and 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, and Friday, May 29. Pre-registration encouraged.

• A light lunch will be served to those who attend a free lunchtime "Staying on Track during Vacations" presentation from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, May 27. Pre-registration is desired.
