CHICAGO --- The effects of the financial crisis on public companies will be the focus of Northwestern University School of Law's 36th Annual Securities Regulation Institute; Christopher Cox, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chairman, will deliver the keynote address.

One of the country's top securities conferences, the institute will take place Jan. 28-30 at the Hotel del Coronado, 1500 Orange Ave., Coronado, Calif.; Chairman Cox will deliver his address at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28.

Designed for corporate and securities attorneys, the institute offers timely analyses of the market and legal developments. It features leading practitioners, government regulators and judges, including nine senior SEC staff members.

"With unprecedented activity in our markets, this year's program is timelier than ever," said John W. White, 2008 institute chair and director of the Division of Corporate Finance, SEC. "The program offers an invaluable opportunity for attorneys to hear from, interact with and learn from many of the individuals directly involved in responding to this crisis."

Each session will provide practical advice for responding to the changing landscape. Guidance will be offered for both firm and in-house counsel who are dealing with the day-to-day developments of the financial crisis, from liquidity concerns, accounting and disclosure issues to enforcement responses.

As a new administration takes shape in the White House, the program also will take a special look at the trends in regulation and at possible future developments at the SEC and in the capital markets.

A number of the speakers have been directly involved as regulators or advisors in the legal matters that will be discussed. Featured participants include SEC Division Directors John W. White, Linda Chatman Thomsen, Erik Sirri and Andrew Donohue; SEC General Counsel Brian Cartwright; and Vice Chancellor Leo E. Strine, Jr. and Chief Justice Myron T. Steele from the Delaware Courts.
