Northwestern Presidential Search Committee Named

A search committee has been formed to help find the next president of Northwestern, announced William Osborn, chair of the committee. The committee will include members of Northwestern's Board of Trustees, students, faculty, staff and alumni.

EVANSTON, Ill. --- A search committee has been formed to help find the next president of Northwestern University, announced William Osborn, chair of the committee. The committee will include members of Northwestern's Board of Trustees, students, faculty, staff and alumni.

"We received many excellent nominations and as a result, we have an outstanding committee that represents many different areas of the University, " Osborn said. "I look forward to working with the members of the committee on this important task." Osborn is a 1969 graduate of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and a 1973 graduate of the Kellogg School of Management, chair of the Board of Trustees budget committee and chairman of the Northern Trust Corp., Chicago.

President Henry S. Bienen announced recently that he plans to retire, effective Aug. 31, 2009.

Trustees who will serve on the committee are: Patrick G. Ryan, chair of the Board of Trustees; Nicholas D. Chabraja, D. Cameron Findlay, Philip Harris, Ellen Philips Katz, Lester B. Knight, Edward M. Liddy, Ann Lurie, Lee M. Mitchell, Patrick G. Ryan Jr., Gordon I. Segal, William E. Sagan and Miles D. White. The vice-chairs of the Board of Trustee committees will serve as ex officio members. They are: John A. Canning, Thomas Z. Hayward Jr. and David B. Weinberg.

Faculty members on the committee will be: L. Catherine Brinson, the Jerome B. Cohen Professor and chair of mechanical engineering; Daniel Diermeier, IBM Distinguished Professor of regulation and competitive practice in the department of managerial economics and decision sciences and professor of political sciences in Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences; Lee Epstein, the Beatrice Kuhn Professor of law; Carol D. Lee, professor of education and social policy; Mark A. Ratner, the Lawrence B. Dumas Distinguished University Professor of chemistry; and Laurie Zoloth, professor of medical humanities and bioethics in the Feinberg School of Medicine and professor of religion in Weinberg and the incoming chair of the General Faculty Committee.

Members of the University staff who will serve on the committee are: Beth Clifford Smith, a consultant in the department of human resources; and Jeffrey Miller, vice dean and chief operating officer of Feinberg.

Student members will be: Sharanya Jaidev, a sophomore in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences studying Mathematical Methods in Social Sciences and Economics, and member of the Northwestern Community Development Corps and Chicago Microfinance Planning Committee; and Marianne Hinds Wanamaker, a graduate student in economics and a Presidential Fellow.

Alumni members will be Leslie Donavan, L82, president-elect of the Northwestern Alumni Association board; and Ava Youngblood, McC79, a former president of the alumni board and a former member of the University's Board of Trustees.

Special advisors to the search committee will be two long-time members of the Board of Trustees, Lester Crown and Howard Trienens, who is also a former chair of the Board.

Marilyn McCoy, vice president for administration and planning, will staff the committee.

Osborn said the search committee would begin its work immediately. "We understand clearly the importance of this committee's work and we are confident that we will be successful in finding outstanding candidates to serve as the Northwestern's next president," he said.
