Fed Challenge Team Places Third in National Competition

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Northwestern University's Federal Reserve Challenge team placed third in the national College Federal Reserve Challenge, held Nov. 26 and 27 in Washington, D.C.

Competition in the championship included Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.; State University College at Geneseo; and Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. Northwestern placed behind Harvard and Geneseo and took home $7,500 in prize money.

“Fed Challenge” team members Jeanne Ruan, Matthew Dabrowski, Chad Frontz, Atanas Stoyanov, and Alexandru Rus were required to make a 20-minute presentation on the current condition of the national economy and then answer questions from three judges.

Before advancing to the national championship, Northwestern won the Midwest regional competition, hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, for the fourth consecutive time on Nov. 5. The team faced competition from 15 other Midwest teams, including Notre Dame and the University of Chicago.

Northwestern's five-member Fed Challenge Team is coached by Mark Witte, a lecturer in the Northwestern economics department.

Ruan, the team captain, is a senior majoring in economics and mathematical methods in the social sciences. After graduation she plans to work at Morgan Stanley as an investment banking analyst.

Dabrowski is a junior majoring in economics and industrial engineering. He plans to pursue a career in investment banking and hopes to start his own company.

Frontz is a junior majoring in economics. He will be pursuing a summer internship in investment banking and hopes to work for a bank or investment firm.

Stoyanov is a junior majoring in economics and mathematical methods in the social sciences. He plans to work in investment banking after graduation.

Rus is a sophomore majoring in economics, mathematical methods in the social sciences and mathematics. He plans to pursue a career in investment management.
