EVANSTON, Ill. --- The Northwestern University School of Music's June music highlights will include individual performances by the University's Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra and Early Music Ensemble. 

Beginning in late June the National High School Music Institute (NHSMI), an integral part of the School of Music, will offer students interested in music careers the opportunity to work with Northwestern University music faculty. These outstanding young musicians will perform throughout the summer as soloist and in large and small ensembles. More information on NHSMI events will be included in the Summer 2007 Music calendar.

Events listed below will be held on Northwestern's Evanston campus at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive; or Alice Millar Chapel, 1870 Sheridan Road, as noted below.

JUNE 2007

Symphonic Band, “Rituals,” 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 1, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Ryan Nelson will conduct a program featuring ritual songs of Mexico. Works to be performed will include H. Owen Reed's, “La Fiesta Mexicana,” Silvestre Revueltas' “Sensemaya” and Ian Krouse's “Cronica del ultimo año en la vida de un mexicano.” Tickets are $6.50 for the general public; $4.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3.50 for full-time students.

Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra (NUSO), 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 2, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. School of Music faculty member Victor Yampolsky will conduct the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra during a performance of Olivier Messiaen's “Turangalila-symphonie.” Featured artists will be Ondes-Martenot player Mary Chun and pianist Winston Choi. (The Ondes-Martenot is one of the earliest 20th century electronic instruments still used by orchestras.) Tickets are $8.50 for the general public; $7 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $4 for full-time students.

“Sonidos Novohispanos” 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 2, Alice Millar Chapel. Northwestern's Early Music Ensemble musicians -- viola da gambist Mary Springfels, harpsichordist David Schrader and guests will perform 16th through 18th century music from New Spain (México), including works by Gutiérrez de Padilla, Jerusalem and Billoni -- many in their first modern performances. Northwestern University musicology Professor Drew Edward Davies will present a lecture after the performance. Davies has edited much of his repertoire from original manuscripts at Mexico's Durango Cathedral. The performance will be presented with the support of Northwestern University's Program in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the department of Spanish and Portuguese. Admission is free.

Illinois Brass Band, 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Ryan Nelson will conduct the concert. Tickets are $4 for the general public; and $2 for senior citizens and full-time students.

National High School Music Institute (NHSMI) Faculty Musicale, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 29, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Admission is free.
