CHICAGO --- Charles L. Goolsby, professor of pathology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, has been appointed the Floyd Elroy Patterson Research Professor of Pathology.

Goolsby is an expert in flow cytometry, a technique for simultaneous measurement of multiple cellular characteristics as well as the sorting of cells based on those measurements, if desired, to isolate subpopulations of cells for further study and analysis. He is director of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University and of the Clinical Flow Cytometry Laboratory at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Goolsby's major research interest is investigating the cell biology of B chronic lymphocytic leukemia, including dysregulation of apoptosis and the role of ZAP70 expression. He also is actively interested in the development of cell-based cytometry assays to analyze signal transduction pathways in the context of dysregulated signaling in hematopoietic malignancies and targeted kinase inhibitor therapies.

He is a founding member and the administrative chair of a consortium of academic and industrial investigators and institutions, administratively centered at Northwestern, which is committed to the development of cellular-based complex multiparameter analyses in support of translational research. The long-term goal is the development of tools to aid in patient specific selection and monitoring of new generations of targeted therapeutics.

Goolsby serves as editor-in-chief for two leading journals in his field, Cytometry and Clinical Cytometry. He also serves on the National Leukemia/Lymphoma Consensus Committee.

Megan Fellman is the science and engineering editor. Contact her at fellman@northwestern.edu
