Traina Named Anderson Outstanding Teaching Professor

Cristina L. H. Traina, associate professor of religion, has been named Harold H. and Virginia Anderson Outstanding Teaching Professor at Northwestern University.

Traina regularly teaches Christian Ethics and Introduction to Christianity. In any given year, she also offers courses on modern and contemporary theology; religious visions of maternity, fertility or childhood; and senior thesis research in religion. Her interests include childhood, sexuality and reproduction, environment and the ethics of economic justice.

She is the author of “Natural Law and Feminist Ethics: The End of the Anathemas.” She is also currently writing “The Sensual Mother: Maternal Experience and the Boundaries of Sexual Ethics.” Other projects include collaborative interdisciplinary research on religion and assisted reproduction and on the history of popular American religious views of the connection between marriage and sexuality, as well as work on the ethics of American economic dependence on low-wage domestic and foreign labor.

Traina received the Weinberg College Teaching Award in 2000 and a Center for Humanities Research fellowship in 1999, recognizing her significant contributions to teaching and scholarship. In 1999 she received the Pathbreaker Award at the Annual Women in Leadership Conference sponsored by Northwestern.
