Robertson Named Ellen Philips Katz Director

David A. Robertson, director of Northwestern’s Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art and lecturer in art history, has been named the first Ellen Philips Katz Director of the Block Museum.

The director’s position has been endowed by Northwestern University Trustee and Block Museum board member Ellen Philips Katz.

Robertson, who was appointed director of the Block Museum in August 2002, previously served as associate director of the University of Chicago’s David and Alfred Smart Museum of Art. Robertson has also held museum directorships at the University of Oregon Museum of Art, Loyola University and Dickinson College.

Robertson has published widely in the history of art and the history of museums. He has written a number of exhibition catalogues and published articles in “The Art Bulletin,” UNESCO’s “Museum International,” and “Grove Dictionary of Art.” He also has taught courses ranging from freshman seminars to graduate seminars in art history, often integrating museum collections in his course work.

Robertson serves on the accreditation committee for the American Association of Museums, which gives him the opportunity to visit and evaluate museums nationally. He is past president of the Illinois Medieval Association and was awarded a Fulbright professorship in 1989-1990 to Germany. Robertson is a member of the Association of College and University Museums and Galleries and the American Association of Museums.
