Summer 2005 Music Calendar

Northwestern University’s summer music highlights include faculty, band and brass concerts and numerous National High School Music Institute (NHSMI) concerts.

NHSMI offers students interested in careers in music the opportunity to work with Northwestern University School of Music faculty. These young musicians perform as soloists and in large and small ensembles. This summer, the NHSMI program will welcome new artistic director, Daniel J. Farris.

Events listed below will be held on Northwestern’s Evanston campus at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive; Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place; or Regenstein Recital Hall, 60 Arts Circle Drive, as noted below.

JUNE 2005

Gail Williams, horn, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 19, Regenstein Recital Hall. Music faculty member Gail Williams will perform Lennox Berkeley’s Trio for horn, violin and piano and works by John McCabe and Dana Wilson. Also featured are pianists Deborah Sobol and Yoko Yamada-Selvaggio and violinist Jasmine Lin. Admission is free.

Horn Master Class Week Finale, 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 24, Regenstein Recital Hall. Master class participants will perform works for horn ensemble. Soloists include the winners of the horn solo competition. School of Music faculty member Gail Williams, retired associate principal horn of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and David Krehbiel, retired principal horn of the San Francisco Symphony, will conduct. Admission is free.

Summer Band, 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Led by conductor Ryan T. Nelson, the band will perform “Toccata Marziale” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, “Sleep” by Eric Whitacre, “George Washington Bridge” by William Schuman and “Yiddish Dances” by Adam Gorb. Tickets are $4 for the general public and $2 for senior citizens, Northwestern faculty and staff and full-time students.

NHSMI Faculty Musicale, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 30, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Admission is free.

JULY 2005

NHSMI Guitar Recital, 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 8, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

NHSMI Choir, Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 9, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The choir will sing “Jeremiah’s Fire” by Rollo Dilworth, “Oh How Lovely This Finely Woven Earth” by Chicago composer Greg Jasperse and other selections. The orchestra will play Milhaud’s Chamber Symphony No. 4 for string orchestra and Weber’s Overture to “Oberon.” The wind ensemble will perform Bernstein’s Overture to “Candide” and Schuman’s “George Washington Bridge.” Daniel J. Farris, Phil Peters and Rollo Dilworth will conduct. Admission is free.

NHSMI Solo and Chamber Music Recital, 3 p.m. Sunday, July 10, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

Summer Orchestra, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 10, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. This performance features cello soloist Ashley Garritson and conductor Robert G. Hasty. The orchestra will perform Antonin Dvorák’s Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in B Minor and Johannes Brahms’ Symphony

No 1. in C Minor. Tickets are $6 for the general public; $4 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3 for full-time students.

Michael Burritt and Friends, 7 p.m. Monday, July 11, Regenstein Recital Hall. School of Music faculty member Michael Burritt will perform his “Waking Dreams” for solo marimba and percussion quintet and works for solo marimba. Admission is free.

NHSMI String Faculty Recital, 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 11, Lutkin Hall. This string concert will feature violinists Hal Grossman, David Hays and Blair Milton; violist Li-Kuo Chang; cellists Stephen Balderston and Jonathan Pegis; bassist Michael Hovnanian and pianist Kuang Hua Huang.  The program includes Beethoven’s String Trio, Op. 9, No. 1 and music by Mozart and others. Admission is free.

NHSMI Ravinia Steans Institute Chamber Concert, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, Lutkin Hall. Each summer the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Institute invites young artists from around the world to study with its stellar faculty. In cooperation with Northwestern’s National High School Music Institute, the Steans Institute brings several of these rising stars to perform on the Northwestern campus. Admission is free.

Summer Band, 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Daniel J. Farris conducts Frank Ticheli’s “Vesuvius,” Pierre LaPlante’s “American Riversongs,” and selections from Leonard Bernstein’s musical “West Side Story,” plus other American classics. Single tickets are $4 for the general public and $2 for senior citizens, Northwestern faculty and staff and full-time students.

NHSMI Honors Chamber Recital, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 16, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Admission is free.

NHSMI Solo and Chamber Music Recital, 3 p.m. Sunday, July 17, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

NHSMI String Faculty Recital, 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 18, Lutkin Hall. Performers include violinists Hal Grossman, David Hays and Blair Milton; violist Li-Kuo Chang; cellists Stephen Balderston, Jonathan Pegis and Brant Taylor; bassist Michael Hovnanian; and pianist Kuang Hua Huang. The program includes Sonata for Cello and Piano by Shostakovich and music by Brahms and others. Admission is free.

Summer Jazz Ensemble and NHSMI Jazz Combos, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Members of Northwestern’s school-year student jazz ensembles, visiting students attending the School of Music’s summer session and NHSMI student combos join forces in a concert featuring Chicago guitarist and School of Music alumnus John Moulder as the special guest. Joel Spencer will conduct. Single tickets are $6 for the general public; $4 for Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3 for full-time students.

Summer University/Community Chorus, “A Potpourri of Choral Music from the 19th and 20th Centuries,” 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 22, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Robert A. Harris conducts Johannes Brahms’ “Liebeslieder Waltzes” and other sacred and secular choral works including folk songs and spirituals. Single tickets are $6 for the general public; $4 for Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3 for full-time students.

NHSMI Wind Ensemble and Honors Chamber Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Daniel J. Farris and Phil Peters will conduct Vincent Persichetti’s Symphony No. 6 and other selections. Admission is free.

NHSMI Solo and Chamber Music Recital, 3 p.m. Sunday, July 24, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

NHSMI Honors Solo Recital, 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 25, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

NHSMI Evening of Strings, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

NHSMI Voice Recital, 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

Summer Band, 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Program highlights include “Sea Songs” by Ralph Vaughan Williams; “Prelude,” “Siciliano” and “”Rondo” by Malcolm Arnold (arranged by the late John Paynter); “Morning Song” by Travis J. Cross; “Third Suite” by Robert Jager; “Amazing Grace” by William Himes; selections from Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man” (arranged by Philip J. Lang); “Geographical Fanfare” by Ernst Toch; an Armed Forces Medley; and “Americans We” by Henry Fillmore. Mallory Thompson will conduct. Single tickets are $4 for the general public and $2 for senior citizens, Northwestern faculty and staff and full-time students.

NHSMI Piano Recital, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

NHSMI Gala Finale, 2 p.m. Friday, July 29, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The choir will sing “Gloria” from Randol Alan Bass’ “Exultate justi.” The orchestra will perform Joshua Reznikow’s Rhapsody No. 1 (“Wildflowers”), excerpts from Ottorino Respighi’s “The Fountains of Rome” and the Introduction to Act III of Richard Wagner’s “Lohengrin.” The wind ensemble will perform Donald Grantham’s “Southern Harmony” and Peter Mennin’s “Canzona.” Admission is free.
