Northwestern Hosts ESPN Town Hall Event on Paying Student-Athletes

Cable television sports programmer ESPN will present a town hall event at Northwestern March 14 on the topic of paying student-athletes. The discussion will feature a panel of well-known authorities in college athletics, including Mark Murphy, Northwestern director of athletics, Joe Paterno, Penn State head football coach, John Thompson, former Georgetown basketball coach, Myles Brand, NCAA chairman, and Tony Dixon, player for the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. Other participants are sports agents and college boosters.

"Should College Athletes Be Paid?" will explore the effects that paying players would have on competitive balance, issues regarding national television contracts and the sanctity of the higher education system.

The taping of the show is free and open to the public and takes place at noon March 14 at Cahn Auditorium. It will be broadcast on ESPN from 7 to 9 p.m. March 16.
