President Henry S. Bienen has been elected to the Board of Directors of The Bear Stearns Companies Inc.
James E. Cayne, Bear Stearns chairman and chief executive officer, said, "We are extremely pleased that Henry has agreed to join the Bear Stearns Board of Directors. His extensive international expertise in academics and management make him an outstanding addition to the board. Bear Stearns is committed to maintaining a strong board with highly qualified independent directors, and Henry's addition underscores our success in this effort."
Bienen will replace William L. Mack, who is leaving the Bear Stearns Board of Directors in October.
"I'm very pleased to be elected to the board of Bear Stearns. It's a great company and I look forward to working with it," Bienen said. "I'm honored to being associated with such a fine institution."
Bienen is a member of the Board of Directors of the Council on Foreign Relations (New York), serving as chair of its Nominating and Governance Committee and as a member of its Executive Committee. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations and serves on its Executive Committee. His board and trustee memberships include the Consortium on Financing Higher Education, the Economic Club of Chicago, Deltak edu, Inc., JSTOR, the John G. Shedd Aquarium, Steppenwolf Theatre Company and the Alain Locke Charter School. Bienen serves on the Executive Committee of the Association of American Universities and is a member of the American Political Science Association.
Bienen has earned numerous awards and fellowships, both nationally and internationally. He has also authored and contributed to more 100 economic and political books, articles and reports.
