Ian Savage on Railroad Fatalities
An elderly Chicago man is dead after his car was hit this week by a commuter train at a crossing, marking the latest in a number of train-pedestrian incidents. Northwestern University transportation economist Ian Savage says a little less than 1,000 people are killed on the nation’s rails every year, with around 500 of those coming as a result of trespassing, and between 300 and 400 coming as a result of incidents at grade crossings…
