As a Bienen School of Music student, you will be part of a vibrant and supportive
community that values excellence, individuality, and initiative. You will be
encouraged to grow as a musician, a scholar, and as a person, both in and outside
the classroom.
Approximately 650 students are enrolled in the music school, with every state in the union represented.
- 13% of undergraduates and 15% of graduates are minority
students.
- Approximately 22% of graduate students are from foreign countries.
Typically, music students come to Northwestern with a wide variety of interests. There are more than 200 activities and organizations on campus in which to participate, as well as 300+ concerts produced each year by the school, including three professional series. The vibrant cultural scene in nearby downtown Chicago provides a wealth of other opportunities for teaching, performing, and hearing world-class music-making.
Undergraduate students are guaranteed housing as freshmen and may live in one of more than 20 residence halls and residential colleges. Other options include on-campus houses for two professional music fraternities, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (men) and Sigma Alpha Iota (women), as well as apartments off campus. Graduate housing is also available, although most graduate students elect to live off campus. Currently, 4,150 students live in campus residence halls, 900 in fraternities and sororities, and 2,600 at home or off campus.

more than 200 student recitals.
