Matt Grevers: Golden Boy

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Matt Grevers (C07) became the first Northwestern graduate in 52 years to win an Olympic medal and the first in 60 years to earn gold. In London in 2012, he became the University’s most decorated Olympian of all time. Grevers won gold in the 100-meter backstroke, setting an Olympic record in the process. It was his first career individual Olympic gold. He also won another gold medal in the 4x100 medley, which was notable for being Michael Phelps’ final Olympic race, and added a silver in the 4x100 freestyle. In February, less than six months before his Olympic victories, Grevers made national headlines when he proposed to his girlfriend and fellow U.S. swimmer Annie Chandler on the winners’ stand after his victory at the Missouri Grand Prix.
