Marni Young

The Youngest Fan at The Outback Bowl

In reading the spring 2016 Northwestern magazine, I enjoyed the recap of the Outback Bowl in Tampa [“Football in Paradise,” page 13, Sports, Campus Life]. It gave me great joy to see the photograph of the young fan — and because she is my daughter Marni, I wanted to share her Northwestern lineage.
Marni (and her twin sister, Eliana) were 13 months old at the Outback Bowl. They were enjoying their second Northwestern football game. The girls were at the game with my wife, Beth, and me, as well as proud Northwestern grandpa, David Zarefsky ’68, ’69 MA/MS, ’74 PhD.
Not at the Outback Bowl, but watching on TV, were uncle Marc Zarefsky ’07, aunt Emily Zbesko Zarefsky ’11 MS, great uncle Ralph Zarefsky ’71, great aunt Alice Young Lachin ’65, and cousin Linda Lachin Saltzman ’91.

Shoot Yourself, but ID Yourself TOO

Editor’s note: We posted on our website more than 30 photos from “Shoot Yourself” [spring 2016], the long-running Syllabus self-portrait feature. We heard from several alumni who recognized themselves or friends in the photo essay. See more photos at bit.ly/ShootYourself. If you spot yourself in one of the photos, send a caption to photos@northwestern.edu.

Toby FosslandI recognized Toby Fossland ’91 from the ski team, on the right. The photo was taken right after the October 1987 stock market crash, so he and his friend had only been on campus maybe six weeks. It was their freshman year, and they were “jumping” out of a ground-floor window that was only 1 to 2 feet off the ground. But it was a great shot!

Diana MutzI’m the one in the Speed Queen dryer. And I still hate laundry!

John MacdonaldI’m the guy on the surfboard. What I remember most about that morning was how brutally cold it was. It was at least in the 20s, and the spring wet suit I had on didn’t help very much once the water hit me.
I still have that old surfboard, but I’m afraid I grew out of the wet suit long ago.
