Andrew Moses Lee

Well-rounded Researcher

Andrew Moses Lee is a true Renaissance man, exploring philosophy and literature between required readings for his Integrated Science Program. His interests span such a variety of topics that he considered chemistry, economics and history before settling on a field of study. He finally narrowed his interests, at least a bit, focusing on math and biological sciences, with an interest in neurobiology.

Lee certainly has made use of his varied interests. He worked in a chemistry lab his freshman year, constructing polymers that could fold into drug-delivering nanoparticles, which could serve as an alternative to chemotherapy. His sophomore year Lee assisted on an economics and political science project on income distribution. He won a Goldwater Scholarship his junior year. During his senior year Lee worked in associate professor Indira Raman’s neurobiology and physiology lab, studying the role of ion channels in electrical signal transmission of information.

Next year the Oak Brook, Ill., resident will enroll in a medical science training program where he will attend medical school and receive his medical degree and doctorate. “I know that for most people, this seems completely nuts,” Lee admits.

He is interested in studying the way that brain disorders produce abnormalities in normal brain function, leading to pathological consequences in behavior and thought.

“I would like to investigate the interface between brain diseases and neuroscience in an effort to better understand how it is that our brains function and to find better treatment alternatives to existing neurological and psychiatric disorders,” Lee says.
