Throughout the year the Northwestern Alumni Association offers workshops to help board members of various alumni clubs around the country build their memberships and improve their marketing and programming efforts. Club officers can also take advantage of leadership development opportunities. Since January the NU Clubs of Boston, Philadelphia, Greater Sarasota, Los Angeles and West Michigan held workshops in their respective cities, and NUBAA (Northwestern University Black Alumni Association) officers planned strategy in Chicago.
This year’s Dance Marathon, March 2–4, got some extra support from young alumni around the country. Through a variety of mini–Dance Marathon events, the NU Clubs of Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Twin Cities and Washington, D.C., raised more than $4,600 in their respective cities. On campus more than 600 dancers raised a record total of $708,711 for Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy and the Evanston Community Foundation.
On June 27 members of the NU Club of Boston are set to join alumni of other Big Ten Conference schools for a preconcert reception and performance of the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall in Boston. In April they enjoyed a taste of Provence during a cooking class at Helen’s Kitchen in Belmont.
In March more than 60 NU Club of Chicago members and their children gathered at the John Evans Alumni Center on the Evanston campus to create housewarming gifts for Habitat for Humanity recipients as part of the Kindness Connection community service project. The club kicked off its spring season with a trip to the United Center to see the Chicago Bulls battle the New York Knicks April 10. Career events included personal branding workshops with author and coach Catherine Kaputa (WCAS70) in Chicago. In May members attended the GlobeMed benefit dinner at the Hilton Garden Inn in Evanston to support international health initiatives, joined students at the “Friendly Confines” for NU Day at Wrigley Field and enjoyed a Monster Percussion Concert in Millennium Park featuring School of Music faculty members Michael Burritt and Paul Wertico. On June 24 members will have the opportunity to see Mirror of the Invisible World, an NAA Chicago Theatre event at the Goodman Theatre. The play is adapted and directed by award-winning director and School of Communication professor Mary Zimmerman (C82, GC85, 94).
On June 12 the NU Club of Washington, D.C., welcomes members to the Peruvian Embassy for a film and discussion of Peru’s business climate, followed by a reception. Contributions will be accepted to fund a scholarship program to benefit Northwestern undergraduates working in the Capitol this summer. Members also supported School of Music students performing at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts May 21 and attended a postperformance reception with Dean Toni-Marie Montgomery. This year’s performers were violist Kristin Figard, a senior from Wilmette, Ill.; trumpeter Michael Martin, a senior from Marietta, Ga.; alto saxophonist and doctoral student Johnny Salinas (Mu05, GMu06); soprano and master’s candidate Micaëla Oeste; oboist Sian Ricketts, a senior from Golden Valley, Minn.; and pianist Kay Kim (GMu06).
