From East Coast to West, young alumni from the NU Clubs of Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., supported Dance Marathon by holding mini-DM parties in their respective cities that raised more than $3,500 for the Pediatric AIDS Chicago Prevention Initiative and the Evanston Community Foundation.
In California the snowbirds of the NU Club of Coachella Valley celebrated the Wildcats’ Sun Bowl appearance at an open house party at the Palm Desert home of Ying and Douglas Jones (D83). In February members discussed advances in stem cell research with John Kessler, the Benjamin and Virginia T. Boshes Professor of Neurology, and in March they reminisced at a performance of Johnny Mercer tunes at the Annenberg Theater in Palm Springs.
Students from Northwestern’s American Music Theatre Project, led by Music Theatre Program director Dominic Missimi, debuted some of their current work by performing for the NU Clubs of Tucson, Phoenix and Sun Cities in February. Attendees at the Tucson event included Eugene Pflughaupt (SESP50) and Margery Ames Pflughaupt (WCAS50), who shared the story of how they met as students through the Waa-Mu Show. In July AMTP premieres The Boys Are Coming Home, a musical featuring book by Berni Stapleton and lyrics by award-winning writer Leslie Arden, at Cahn Auditorium on the Evanston campus.
Author and sports journalist Christine Brennan (J80, GJ81), fresh from her reporting duties at the 2006 Winter Olympics, shared her Torino, Italy, experiences at an NU Club of Washington, D.C., luncheon in March. Members also visited her at the Politics and Prose bookstore in May, where she signed copies of her father-daughter memoir, Best Seat in the House: A Father, A Daughter, A Journey Through Sports (Scribner, 2006).
