Born Sept. 20, 1948, George R.R. Martin grew up in Bayonne, N.J., where he “lived a very constricted life. My family didn’t have any money or a car,” he says. Martin lived in Bobb Hall as a freshman and later at the North Shore Hotel, where the University had leased rooms. As a student, he helped launch Northwestern’s first chess club.
