If you have to weather winter in Evanston, you might as well enjoy it. In January the University converted the Norris University Center east lawn into an ice skating rink, the first on campus in more than a decade. Austin Young, a junior from south Florida, suggested the idea to Northwestern President Morton Schapiro after reading in University Archives about a former rink at the corner of Emerson and Orrington in Evanston. President Schapiro liked the idea, and construction began in mid-December. Willie the Wildcat joined students on the ice at the official opening Jan. 7. Students, faculty, staff and their guests, as well as the general public, can skate for free with their own equipment. Skates are available to rent from Norris Outdoors.
