Theater events dominated the NU Club of Chicago’s winter calendar. In December 2005, members attended a performance of The Nutcracker by the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University. In January they took a backstage tour of the Chicago Shakespeare Theater on Navy Pier and enjoyed a preshow discussion and production of Much Ado About Nothing, and in February they met at the Museum of Contemporary Art for Loving Repeating: A Musical of Gertrude Stein. Also in February alumni joined kids from Chicago’s Off the Street Club at Welsh-Ryan Arena to cheer on the Wildcat men’s basketball team at the NU Club of Chicago’s annual Bonding over Basketball event.
In November 2005, NU Club of Boston members caught Kat Parsons’ (C99) show at the Paradise Lounge (see “In the Driver’s Seat”). They also celebrated the holidays with other Big Ten Conference alumni at Game On! Sport Café while participating in a toy drive for patients at Children’s Hospital Boston in December. Club members also learned the finer points of wine tasting at Troquet in February.
On the West Coast, Mark Ratner (G69), Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Chemistry at the Judd A. and Marjorie Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, presented “Nano 201: Exploring Nanotechnology? to members of the NU Club of Los Angeles in January. Club members also made a trip to the Staples Center for the Los Angeles Kings–Chicago Blackhawks hockey game in February.
Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science Dean Julio Ottino visited the NU Club of Naples in January, and in February Dominic Missimi, director of Northwestern’s American Music Theatre Project, introduced a group of musical theater student performers to alumni members of the NU Clubs of Phoenix, Sun Cities and Tucson.
Arizona Congressman Jim Kolbe (WCAS65) hosted the NU Club of Washington, D.C., event “How to Get a Job When You Already Have One,” featuring business and motivational speaker Rob Sullivan (GJ90) on Oct. 11, 2005, in the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill. Approximately 50 alumni attended this Northwestern Alumni Association Young Professional Program.
This fall, members of the NU Club of West Michigan gathered in the kitchen of George Bauer (McC72, KSM74) and Julia Dunham Bauer’s (J71, GJ72) Grand Rapids home to sample wines and learn how to pair them with a variety of entrees. In October 2005, School of Communication associate professor Scott Curtis led a spirited critique of the Gene Kelly–Debbie Reynolds classic movie Singin’ in the Rain for an appreciative crowd in East Lansing. Also in October Athletic Director Mark Murphy prepped local Wildcat fans for the football team’s victory over the Michigan State Spartans at a pregame brunch.
