Gary Gelzer (WCAS70, Nav70) of Goodyear, Ariz., was appointed to the local planning and zoning commission for a three-year term. He is an active model railroader and enjoys senior softball.

Rikki Klieman (C70) of Los Angeles is a lawyer at the Boston-based firm Klieman, Lyons, Schindler and Gross, an adjunct professor at Columbia Law School and an anchor on Court TV. She wrote an autobiography, Fairy Tales Can Come True: How a Driven Woman Changed Her Destiny (Regan Books, 2003) and has appeared on 60 Minutes, 20/20 and Good Morning America.

Chris Kamm Cairns (WCAS71) of San Jose, Calif., was named executive director of broadband technologies at SBC in San Ramon, Calif., in 2002. She oversees selection and introduction of broadband equipment and services nationally.

James Reisa (G71, 72) of Alexandria, Va., director of the board on environmental studies and toxicology at the National Academies in Washington, D.C., received the Distinguished Service Award of the National Academy of Sciences in 2002 for outstanding contributions to the academy’s work.

David Badger (GJ72) of Franklin, Tenn., professor of journalism at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, authored Lizards: A Natural History of Some Uncommon Creatures (Voyageur Press, 2002). He has written three natural history books and edited nine others and has been a book critic and columnist for the Nashville Tennessean.

Michael Bartholomew (J72, GJ73) of Brussels, Belgium, was re-elected director of the European Telecommunications Network Operators’ Association of the 40 largest telecommunications companies in 35 nations.

Salvador Bernal (GC72) of Quezon, Philippines, an associate professor at Ateneo de Manila University, is also a poet and a scene and costume designer for theater, opera, ballet and film. He was named national artist of the Philippines, the highest artistic honor from the government.

Michael Rose (WCAS72) of Portland, Ore., a partner at the law firm Steenson, Schumann, Tewksbury and Rose, specializes in criminal defense. He is the editor and co-author of The Criminal Law Formbook (OCDLA, 2003).

Stephen Colarelli (WCAS73), of Midland, Mich., professor of psychology at Central Michigan University, wrote No Best Way: An Evolutionary Perspective on Human Resource Management (Praeger, 2003) about myths regarding organizations and their goals.

Phillip Figa (WCAS73) of Greenwood Village, Colo., president of the law firm Burns, Figa & Will in Englewood, Colo., was named to the U.S. District Court by President Bush last spring.

Joe Sachen (WCAS73) of Aurora, Ill., was named Realtor of the Year for 2003 by the Aurora Tri County Association of Realtors for his volunteer efforts including lobbying, fundraising for the political action committee and educating members about legislative matters.

Daniel Shaw (formerly Schweid) (C73) of Nyack, N.Y., works as a psychoanalyst in New York City and published a paper, “On the Therapeutic Action of Analytic Love,” in the April issue of Contemporary Psychoanalysis.

Ronald Thompson (WCAS73) of Mercer Island, Wash., rejoined Wells Fargo in Seattle as a private banker and vice president for private client services after 25 years in the financial services field. He previously worked at U.S. Bank in Bellevue, Wash., and Citibank in San Francisco.

Dale F. Voelker (GMu73, 77) of Elgin, Ill., chair of the division of music at Judson College, led choir tours to California, Germany and Brazil the past few years. During his sabbatical in 2004 he will focus on preparing manuscripts from G.P. Telemann’s New Year’s cantatas.

Patricia Lee Blackburn (J74, GJ76) of Charlotte, N.C., was named senior vice president, corporate communications, at Bank of America in Charlotte in September 2002.

L. Steven Platt (WCAS75) of Buffalo Grove, Ill., an attorney at Arnold and Kadjan, Chicago, was named one of the top plaintiff’s employment lawyers in Illinois in the 2003–04 edition of Chambers and Partners USA Best Business Lawyers in the U.S. He wrote Age Discrimination Litigation (James Publishing, 2000), for which a supplement was published in July.

David Williams Russell (L76) of Carmel, Ind., partner at Bose McKinney & Evans law firm in Indianapolis, had a commentary in E-Commerce: Law & Jurisdiction (Kluwer Law International, 2003). As chair of his firm’s international group, he concentrates in complex international and domestic business.

Larry Sheingorn (FSM76) of Rockville, Md., an ophthalmologist, is suffering from terminal esophageal cancer. He invites friends to visit his personal Web site at www.drsheingorn.com.

Robert C. Teitelbaum (G76, 79) of Webster, N.Y., is the president of Imagineer, a digital photo restoration, retouching and custom-imaging firm. He worked at Kodak for 22 years.

Barton J. Adrian (McC77) of Milwaukee celebrated 20 years as a meteorologist at WITI-TV but mostly enjoys life with his wife and four sons.

Emily Hill Chardell (GJ77) of Deerfield, Ill., is president and founder of SFI, Ltd., a marketing research company serving clients in diverse industries from consumer goods and services to health care and technology.

Stanley N. Logan (WCAS77) of Lake Forest, Ill., was named office/managing partner at the Chicago accounting and tax firm KPMG in May. He oversees the firm’s assurance and tax work for middle market and global companies.

Chaim Scheff (McC77) of Jerusalem is senior patent attorney and founder of 01 Patents Ltd. The firm secures patents for income-generating facilities and has access to Fortune 500 companies.

Stewart Figa (C78) of Chicago, a cantor at West Suburban Temple Har Zion, River Forest, Ill., performed at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., in May. The concert was part of a special exhibit and included songs from his recent CD, Dancing on the Edge of a Volcano, Jewish Cabaret, Popular Songs 1900–45. He and his wife, Leslie Buchbinder-Figa (WCAS79), have two daughters.

Gerald Grunska (G78) of Evergreen, Colo., was inducted into the American Football Association Hall of Fame this year and was in Who’s Who in America the last three years. He is the author of Evaluating Officiating Performance (Referee Enterprises, 2003). He retired in 1988 as English chair in the Highland Park, Ill., high schools.

Elizabeth K. Jackson (GC78, 89) of Carson, Calif., a communications professor at California State University in Bakersfield, Calif., received a Fulbright grant in April to work on a documentary about volunteerism and teach at Midlands State University in Zimbabwe through August 2004.

Deborah Fagen Lee (SESP78) of Highwood, Ill., a licensed social worker, is the hospice clinical coordinator for the Lake County office of Palliative Care Center and Hospice of the North Shore in Evanston.

Ona Hill Lewis (WCAS78, KSM86) of Gahanna, Ohio, has enjoyed being at home with her 5-year-old daughter, Ruth, and is planning to resume her investment management career soon.

Howard Prager (WCAS78) of Mount Prospect, Ill., oversees academic quality as director of Lake Forest Corporate Education. In April he was selected to the American Society of Training and Development’s international board of directors.

Mitchell York (WCAS78) of Sayville, N.Y., has established two businesses: selling smoothies from kiosks and coaching business executives and other people in transition from corporate life to independent business.

Allison Burnett (C79) of Los Angeles, a screenwriter, wrote Christopher: A Tale of Seduction (Broadway Books, 2003), about the friendship of a young straight man and his middle-aged homosexual neighbor.

Mark D. Pescovitz (FSM77, GFSM79) of Carmel, Ind., director of the division of organ transplant and professor of surgery and microbiology/immunology at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, was elected Region 10 Councillor on the United Network for Organ Sharing board of directors in June.

Demetrios Velis (FSM79) of Hoofddorp, the Netherlands, is the director of the EEG department at the Dutch Epilepsy Clinics Foundation in Heemstede. He is a member of the International League against Epilepsy’s subcommittee on new diagnostic methods.
