Winter 2003 1950s Genevieve Mahre Alexander (SESP50) of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, retired after 35 years of teaching business subjects to high school students in South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. She fulfilled a childhood dream, relocating to Water Island, where she is a member of many organizations, including the League of Women Voters and the Water Island Civic Association. Howard Jacobson (FSM51) of Plant City, Fla., retired from the College of Public Health at the University of South Florida in Tampa in May after 50 years there. He was a research professor in the department of community health. C. Ray Carlson (McC52) of Pasadena, Calif., is active in the Rotary Club of Altadena, Calif. He teaches business and entrepreneurship in high schools in California, Israel and Uganda, hoping to help reduce poverty through job creation. Jerome S. Lamet (EB52, L55) of Chicago, president of Jerome S. Lamet Ltd., established a legal aid debt counseling program for seniors and the disabled in 2002. Kenneth B. Gordon (G53) of Orleans, Mass., retired as an obstetrician and gynecologist after delivering about 7,000 babies in 38 years. He also served on the medical school faculties of Harvard, Tufts and Boston universities and the University of Massachusetts. He enjoys ham radio, tennis, sailing, mountain climbing and spending time with his five sons. Kazuo Ihara (WCAS53) of Mission Viejo, Calif., retired after a career as an accountant for a subsidiary of Bristol-Myers Squibb and has lived in Orange County for 17 years. Now age 90, he enjoys his son and 16-month-old granddaughter, Valerie. Ann Kelly (SESP54) of Phoenix retired from teaching learning-disabled and seriously ill children in a homebound program. Her first granddaughter, Carly Anderson, was born on Ann’s birthday last year. Lawrence R. Smith (Mu54, GMu55) of Kalamazoo, Mich., a professor emeritus at Kalamazoo College, was elected president of the National Braille Association for 2003–05. He is certified by the Library of Congress as a Braille music transcriber. Clifford Stiles (FSM57) of Foley, Minn., a retired physician, was selected to represent Northwestern University at the inauguration of LaVerne Ragster as president of the University of the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas. Patrick E. Milks (McC58, Nav58, KSM67) of Winnetka, Ill., has retired as a registered professional engineer. Maureen Costello Shelly (J58) of Wilmette, Ill., retired as development director for the YMCA in 2000. She is studying genealogy and family history, volunteering, corresponding with Northwestern friends and spending time with her grandsons. She also has time for Northwestern sports events, concerts and Alumnae courses. Thomas Shields (FSM58) of Auburn, Maine, was re-elected to a third term in the Maine House of Representatives in 2002. He serves as House Republican leader for the joint standing committee on health and human services.
