When Henry Rosoff stood on the Culver Studios stage, clutching a college Emmy award trophy, he understood what it meant to be a champ.
"I kept thinking, 'This is what those guys we cover get to feel like all the time, or at least when they win,'" said Rosoff, a Medill School senior from Scotch Plains, N.J. The SportsNight anchor and his colleagues earned the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' College Television Award in the best newscast category for SportsNight, a weekly sports recap and highlight show on the Northwestern News Network.
SportsNight executive producer Ryan Dietz, a Medill senior from Schaumburg, Ill.; anchor Carl Deffenbaugh, a Medill senior from Columbia, Md.; and producer Patrick Lester, a Medill senior from Albuquerque, N.M., joined Rosoff at the awards gala in Los Angeles in March. It was SportsNight's first College Television Award.
The student-produced show received a first-place cash prize of $2,000. As a result of the award, SportsNight will also be broadcast on mtvU, a campus television station available on NUTV and other college campus cable providers. SportsNight was also recently named a finalist for a College Broadcasters Inc. award.
To win the Emmy, SportsNight beat out student-produced shows completely devoted to hard news.
"Our show is a product of a lot of dedication and long hours of hard work," Lester said. "To be recognized as one of the nation's top broadcasts means a lot to me and everyone at Northwestern News Network."
