What Not to Wear

Some cautionary tips (for women) from Clinton Kelly

CLOTHES THAT DON’T FIT:

This seems obvious, but “it’s the biggest mistake everyone makes,” says Kelly. “Shoulder seams need to fit on the shoulder. Jackets need to close. Trousers should be a half-inch off the floor.”

If pants fit perfectly in the hips, but not the waist — take them to a tailor, he says.

“It drives me crazy that women expect to walk into a store and find a suit that fits off the rack. A man will buy a suit and it’ll be checked in 10 different places.”

MINISKIRTS OVER 35:

“Let the 20-year-olds have their fun,” he advises. “When you’re 40 and trying to look 20, it looks sad. Part of the beauty of getting older is that you have a certain self-confidence and self-respect, and if you portray that in the way you dress, it’s really powerful. Trying to chase every fad reeks of insecurity.”

TOO MUCH FABRIC:

“A lot of women over a certain age put on extra weight in their tummy. They tend to drape themselves in a lot of fabric and hope it’ll go away. But you sort of forget what’s underneath and that allows it to grow bigger,” Kelly says.

PJs IN THE PRODUCE SECTION:

“You don’t wear pajama bottoms to the supermarket,” he says. “You don’t go to work in torn jeans. You don’t show your bellybutton at work.”

CUFFED TROUSERS:

They make legs look shorter, says Kelly. So do chunky shoes and pants that grip the ankle. Tapered shoes and dark, straight-leg pants make legs look longer.

HIP-HUGGING SKIRTS:

A-line skirts, says the co-host, are more flattering to most body types.  — A.T.
