The Reconciling in Christ Program was created by Lutherans Concerned/North America to identify and recognize Lutheran congregations that welcome lesbian and gay believers. ULC became an RIC congregation on May 9, 2004, by adopting the following statement:

The people of University Lutheran Church are "called to share God's love in Christ on the Northwestern campus and in the larger community." We know, however, that the world in which we live, study, and work is often an unloving place, filled with alienation and brokenness. Christ calls us to reconciliation and wholeness. We are challenged by the Gospel to be agents of healing within our society.

We affirm with the apostle Paul that in Christ "there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female" (Galatians 3:28). Christ has made us one. We explicitly acknowledge that this reconciliation extends to people of all sexual orientations. Because gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons often face scorn and alienation from both society and the Church, we wish to make known our caring and concern. It is for this purpose that we affirm the following:

• that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people share with everyone the worth that comes from being unique individuals created by God;
  
• that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people are welcome within the membership of University Lutheran Church upon making the same affirmation of faith that all Christians make; and
  
• that as members of University Lutheran Church, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people are expected and encouraged to share in the sacramental and general life of this congregation.

The church is a gathering of believers who worship together and share Christ-like love for each other. We believe that these affirmations are critical to fulfilling our clear and simple commission to "do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God." (Micah 6:8)
