Emergency Response

Staff Availability

Community assistants (CAs) are on duty every evening from 8:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. Contact information is posted in each building. Professional staff members in residence life are on call 24 hours per day, 7 days a week to respond to emergency situations involving students.

Fire Alarms

All occupants are expected to immediately exit any building when a fire alarm sounds. Periodically throughout the year, University Residential Life in conjunction with the Office of Risk Management will coordinate fire drills so that students can familiarize themselves with appropriate evacuation procedures.

Emergency Call Boxes

Though CA staff are available in the evenings, for any situation involving an immediate threat to someone's personal safety, students are advised to contact University Police (for emergencies, call 911; for non-emergencies, call 847-491-3456).  The university has numerous call boxes around campus and in the residence halls.  Those offer a direct connection with University Police.

Campus Resources

University Residential Life staff have training in emergency management and crisis response.  Part of that training involves a substantial partnership and outreach with other university offices.  Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Emergency Preparedness information offered by University Police.  Students should also note the campus-wide emergency information for Northwestern University.
