Bed Bug Information
Frequently Asked Questions about Bed Bugs
Where do bed bugs come from?
Bed bugs are typically carried on clothes, luggage, bedding, or other materials as an individual moves from a location with bed bugs to another. Bed bugs may be present at hotels, airports, apartments, or just about anywhere. Once thought to have been eliminated from the United States, bed bugs are believed to be reappearing due to increased travel and the decreased use of heavy pesticides.
How do I know if I have bed bugs?
The Illinois Department of Public Health provides information about what to look for if you suspect bed bugs. The Mayo Clinic provides information about what to look for in terms of bed bug bites.
What should I do if I think I may have bed bugs?
If you think you may have bed bugs, we encourage you to immediately notify a Community Assistant. An inspection of your room by a pest control specialist will be arranged. We ask that you limit your movement to reduce the spread of bed bugs. You are also encouraged to utilize Student Health Service if you are in need of medical attention.
Are bed bugs dangerous?
Bed bugs do not generally spread disease, but may cause skin irritation similar to a mosquito bite.
