Fall Closing 2017

Thanksgiving Information

All undergraduate residential facilities will be open for the duration of the Thanksgiving break (November 23-26, 2017).  The Foster-Walker West Dining Hall and convenience store will be open limited hours during the Thanksgiving break.  Please visit the Northwestern Dining website for more information.  If you intend to stay in your residence hall over the break and will eat at Foster-Walker, please complete the survey sent to all undergraduates living on campus.


All undergraduate residential facilities close for Winter Break at 12-noon on Saturday, December 9, 2017; and will re-open at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 7, 2018.All students must leave the buildings by this time and complete all closing checklist items (posted on each room door) before departing. All buildings reopen at noon on Sunday, January 7, 2018. 

For residents of 1835 Hinman, please review the closing and moving instructions provided to you via your Northwestern student email account.

Closing Checklist Items

Closing checklists are posted on every room door. It is important to complete the checklist to ensure the health and safety of your room and the community. It is especially important to ensure that your window is closed and latched, the heat turned on low (not off), and your door is locked.

All residents should contribute to completing the tasks below. The last person leaving is responsible for making sure that all remaining items on the checklist are completed:

  • Take all important and valuable items with you (wallet, medication, passport, tickets, computer, etc.)
  • Floors swept or vacuumed
  • Trash/recycling emptied, including all perishable items
  • Blinds/curtains shut
  • Empty and defrost refrigerator(s).Fridges that are not defrosted will be emptied by the staff; and residents will be charged a labor charge for this service. All items in the fridge, including containers, will be disposed of.
  • Clean the bathroom (where applicable)
  • Windows closed and latched
  • Heating turned to low
  • Lights turned off and everything unplugged
  • Lock your door and sign below as you leave

Additionally, all community area fridges, such as lounges, pantries and kitchens, will be emptied and cleaned over the break period. All food and containers will be disposed of.

Prohibited Items

Residential Services staff, as well as City of Evanston staff, will complete safety inspections in each room over the break period. If you have prohibited items, please bring them home with you when you leave for break. Prohibited items that are found will be removed by University staff and documented through the conduct system. If a prohibited item is removed from your room or suite lounge, a notice will be provided by your Residence Director.

Please note the following:

The Evanston housing code forbids the use or storage in sleeping rooms (including suite lounges) of any appliances for cooking or heating food or beverages, including but not limited to:

  • Microwaves
  • Hot plates
  • Coffee makers (including Keurigs)
  • Blenders
  • Toaster ovens
  • Rice cookers
  • Water warmers

Kemper Suites with kitchens may have cooking appliances in kitchen areas.

The following items are also prohibited or restricted:

  • Bicycles
  • Refrigerators larger than three cubic feet
  • Hanging items from ceilings or fire safety equipment, covering more than 50% of wall or window space with decorations
  • Lighted candles
  • Lit incense (candles or incense that have burnt wicks will be removed)
  • Live holiday trees
  • Holiday or decorative lights
  • Fireworks
  • Explosives, incendiary materials, weapons, & firearms
  • Air conditioners not installed by NU
  • Lofts or similar structures
  • Water beds
  • Animals
  • Alcohol or containers that previously held alcohol (they will be disposed of if everyone in your room is under 21)
  • Outlet adapters
  • Candle warmers
  • Public area furniture in a student room
  • Tampering with fire safety equipment.

Mail and Package Delivery

Package centers will be close at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2017, and reopen at 8:00 a.m. Monday, November 27, 2017.

The last day of mail delivery will be Friday, December 8, 2017. Mail and packages will continue to be accepted at Foster-Walker over the break period, but mail will not be distributed across campus and packages will not be sent to Kemper for distribution. Mail and packages will be available for pick up at Foster-Walker between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays during break, except on University Holidays. Mail delivery and normal package pickup hours will resume on Tuesday, January 2, 2018.

24 Hour Quiet Hours Begin

24 hour quiet hours begin at 5:00 p.m. on Friday December 1, 2017, and end at 5:00 p.m. on Friday December 8, 2017.

Complete a School Dude request before you leave.

Not Returning To Campus in January?

If you are returning to your room in January, you do not need to formally checkout beyond completing the checklist.

If you are not returning for Winter Quarter, complete a cancellation form with the Administrative Services office located in 2122 Sheridan. After you have moved out by noon on Saturday December 9, 2017, complete an express checkout at the neighborhood desk.

Winter Break Housing

All undergraduate halls will be closed between Saturday, December 9, 2017 at noon and Sunday, January 7, 2018 at noon.  Winter break housing is not available.
