Luggage and Bike Storage
Luggage Storage
Most undergraduate residence halls and residential colleges have a "trunk room" to store luggage and boxes. Residents can store a maximum of five (5) items per person (space permitting). The only items that can be stored are:
- Empty and flattened cardboard boxes
- Empty suitcases and trunks
- Empty plastic storage tubs
Furniture, refrigerators, rugs, clothing, books, appliances, and other personal items of any kind may not be stored in trunk rooms. Owners may be billed or sanctioned for the removal of any non-authorized items found in storage.
Regular access to trunk rooms is provided during the first and last weeks of each quarter from 8:00 p.m. -10:00 p.m. nightly. All other access is by appointment only, with a minimum of two business days advance notice required. Contact your CA to arrange an appointment.
Bike Storage
Northwestern's Residence Hall Rules and Regulations prohibit students from storing bicycles in student rooms. A few residence halls or residential colleges offer limited indoor bike storage. Check with your CA to learn if your hall/college offers any indoor bike storage. All residential areas have ample bike racks near building entrances. Consult the University Police website for more information about bicycle safety precautions.
If possible, residents are encouraged to take their bikes home for winter quarter. Chicago winters can be very tough on bikes. Limited bike storage is available to residents during the winter quarter. On a first-come, first serve basis, residents may store their bikes in a secure area managed by University Residential Life (URL). Residents may drop off their bikes during the last few days of the fall quarter and retrieve them during the first few days of the spring quarter. Bikes are stored in a basement room at Parkes Hall and are stored at one's own risk. Residents will not be able to access their bikes during the time of storage. We will notify residents of this opportunity by e-mail during fall quarter just before Reading Week.
The specific drop-off dates and pick-up dates will be posted here when those dates are finalized.
Please note the following requirements:
- We will only store bicycles
- We will not store anything that has a motor of any kind
- Your bicycle must have a kick stand
- You will not have access to your bike until the first week of Spring Quarter (specific hours will be posted here once confirmed)
If you wish to store your bike, please bring it to Parkes Hall (1870 Sheridan Road) during the designated times (Parkes Hall is connected to Alice Millar Chapel). You must have a valid NU Wildcard with you. You are also expected to have completed the process to register your bicycle with the Northwestern University Police Department.
Summer Storage
The university does not provide storage of any personal belongings over the summer months in any space within the residence halls. Items left in the trunk rooms at the end of the year or bikes left in bike storage at the conclusion of that program will be deemed abandoned and will be discarded.
University and Student Services, Inc. is a preferred vendor for summer storage options. Visit the USS website for more details about how the program works.
Liability Disclaimer
The university does not assume any liability for personal items stored on campus. Students and their parents are encouraged to purchase insurance that will cover the student’s personal property while the student is away from home attending school. Any loss, theft, or damage to personal property should be promptly reported to the University Police Department.
