Community Assistant for Seabury
REPORTING STRUCTURE AND SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The CA reports to and is supervised by the Area Coordinator (AC) for Graduate Residential Life and the Associate Director of University Residential Life (URL).
- During the summer, when on duty the CA is primarily responsible for Seabury Graduate Apartments.
- During the academic year, when on duty the CA is primarily responsible for the Seabury Graduate Apartments and Seabury Hall (Undergraduate Housing).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Summer

The CA is on duty each evening from 8 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. and is responsible for conducting at least one safety round of the building(s) to which residents are assigned. When the CA is on duty, the CA will be available to answer the duty phone and respond (in person if necessary) within 20 minutes to emergency situations as needed.
- The CA will report actions taken related to resident calls to the duty phone or safety rounds to the AC via email or phone depending on the severity of the incident. The CA will coordinate vacation leaves with the AC to ensure that the Engelhart staff will cover duty when the CA is away from campus. The CA may also assist with duty coverage as needed over break periods.
- The CA will coordinate at least three programs that meet the needs and interests of the community.
Academic Year
- The CA is on duty approximately two-thirds of the evenings each month from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. and is responsible for conducting at least one safety round of the building(s) to which undergraduate and graduate residents are assigned. When the CA is on duty, the CA will be available to answer the duty phone and respond (in person if necessary) within 15 minutes to emergency situation as needed.
- The CA is responsible for coordinating with the undergraduate Community Assistant (CA) to create a monthly duty schedule and communicating the duty schedule to appropriate supervisors.
- When the undergraduate CA is not on campus during winter and spring breaks the CA is responsible for covering duty for the entire residential area.
- The CA will coordinate vacation leaves with the AC to ensure that the Engelhart staff will cover duty when the CA is away from campus. The CA may also assist with Engelhart duty coverage as needed over break periods.
- The CA will coordinate at least four programs each quarter that meet the needs and interests of the community.
Year Round Responsibilities
- The CA will meet bi-weekly with the Area Coordinator for Graduate Residential Life.
- The CA will confront anyone (including students, hall staff, and/or their guests) who are observed or suspected of violating University policy and report the confrontation to the AC. The CA is expected to inform the AC in writing each time the CA learns of an alleged violation of University policy.
- The CA will report actions taken related to resident calls to the duty phone and/or safety rounds to the AC via email or phone depending on the severity of the incident.
- The CA will post accurate duty contact information for residents and other emergency or safety information as appropriate.
- CA may be expected to assist with major check-in/check-out time periods as necessary.
- CA may be expected to perform job responsibilities when not on duty if asked by their supervisor.
- The CA is expected to respect the confidentiality of their residents and to uphold the confidentiality requirements of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- The CA may not communicate with any member of the press as a representative of URL, their residential areas, or other CA related matters without the AC’s approval.
- The CA will not misuse, give, or lend to anyone any staff-related keys. The CA will be charged for any key damaged or lost while in his/her care and may be held responsible for any related expenses.
- The CA will not misuse the CA duty phone or other staff equipment left in his or her care and may be held responsible for the repair or replacement cost of items damaged or lost while in one’s care
Qualifications
- CA positions are available for students enrolled at Northwestern University full-time. Post-Doctoral students may apply. You must be in good academic standing with the University.
- CAs must support and abide by University policies and regulations.
Working Conditions
- CA’s must maintain a high level of accessibility and availability for residents and staff members. Employment is based on satisfactory performance.
- Period of employment begins Summer 2012-Spring 2013. A mandatory training period will occur before employment begins.
- CA’s are expected to live in their apartment during the time of their employment.
Compensation
CA’s receive a one-bedroom apartment in Seabury which includes utilities and cable TV access.
