Assistant Residence Director (two positions available)

Overview of the Position 

As part of the Residential Services Team, Assistant Residence Directors (ARDs) advise one to five hall governments and works collaboratively with faculty, staff and students to foster vibrant and inclusive residential environments that contribute to the vision, mission, and strategic plan of Student Affairs. ARDs are Northwestern graduate students who serve as part-time (20 hours per week), live-in staff members and report to a full-time Residential Services professional staff member. This position includes working with diverse groups of students, staff, and faculty in a highly selective and competitive academic environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Hall government advising (75 percent)

  1. Advise one to five hall governments.
  2. Coordinate and implement the annual hall government recruitment and election process.
  3. Serve on a training committee to provide hall government officers with fall training and on-going training related to officer responsibilities.
  4. Attend hall government executive board meetings and major programs.
  5. Facilitate the annual review and revision of hall government constitutions.
  6. Coordinate with Residence Director(s) to ensure that staff and hall government programs complement each other and do not overlap.
  7. Facilitate training programs for Residential College officers as requested.
  8. Work with hall government officers to develop and monitor a sound budget and operational procedures.
  9. Where applicable, develop and maintain effective communication and collaboration with the Faculty Master’s staff through frequent contact.
  10. Where applicable, co-advise the Residence Hall Association.

Administrative (20 percent)

  1. Attend all ARD training and in-service training programs.
  2. Attend departmental hall staff training programs as required throughout the academic year.
  3. Attend department and area staff meetings.
  4. Attend one-on-one meetings with supervisor.
  5. Develop and submit timely written reports on the progress of one’s projects and initiatives.
  6. Develop and provide content for the Residential Services website and social media initiatives.
  7. Report all crimes of which they become aware as required by the Higher Education Act, also known as the Clery Act.
  8. Report any reasonable cause for concern that a child may be abused or neglected to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

Professional Development (5 percent)

  1. Participate in department and division-wide professional development activities.
  2. Attend Chicago area or regional workshops/conferences for continued development and training.
  3. Stay current in professional development by reviewing articles, journals, books and/or websites.

This position description is based on an average of 20 hours per week with some work required on evenings and weekends.  Appointments are for the 2013-14 academic year only. The number of hours per week and percentage of time devoted to each area may vary from time to time. Duties and assignments are subject to change at the discretion of the department Director.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled at Northwestern University in a master’s of higher education program or similar field for the entire 2013-14 academic year.
  • Experience working with high-achieving and diverse students in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, organization, administration, advising skills and experience as well as a commitment to advancing social justice, furthering student learning, and enriching the Northwestern experience.

Compensation

The ARD will receive a $600.00 monthly stipend (10 months) plus housing accommodations and a 6-meal per week meal plan to use when the campus dining halls are open. Please note, the candidate selected for this position will not receive any additional benefits, other than the stipend, apartment and meal plan stated above.  We are not able to offer a tuition waiver, health insurance, or other benefits that may be available with other graduate assistantships on campus.
