Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, Inc.

Every summer (early June-early August), 32 promising Latino undergraduates from across the country are selected for an eight-week program in the nation’s capital. While in DC, interns work in the offices of U.S. representatives. Interns benefit from the leadership development curriculum’s emphasis on work experience, community service, and learning. This comprehensive three-prong approach fosters critical professional development and personal growth in the participants.

Evanston Coalition of Latino Resources (ECLR)

If you have an interest in gaining or expanding your skills in the areas of community development, organization and event planning, this might be the volunteer experience for you.
 
 Community Development Coordinator(s) & Event Planner(s) needed
 
1 to 2 volunteers are needed to help with the organization and development of a conference on Immigration scheduled for Feb. 12, 2006 at Evanston Northwestern Hospital and sponsored by the Evanston Coalition for Latino Resources. This conference would likely involve the participation of congressional representatives or Cook county commissioner.
 
Volunteers are wanted 3-6 hours a week (holiday breaks will be allowed for) to help with the development of brochures, invitation letters, coordination with presenters and other organizational tasks. In addition, volunteers are wanted to help coordinate community development efforts by Trilogy’s Evanston office.

National Association of Hispanic Publications

The National Hispanic Press Foundation provides summer internships for Hispanic students who are pursuing careers in journalism and/or publishing. Interns can work at one of the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP) member publication work sites, available in a number of cities throughout the U.S. They will also complete assignments designed to enhance their learning, while earning a small stipend. Students with an active interest in journalism and college undergraduates pursuing careers in media communications, journalism, or publishing are eligible to apply.

Smithsonian Institution Internships

The Office of Fellowships offers a number of opportunities to increase participation of minority groups who are underrepresented in Smithsonian scholarly programs, in the disciplines of research conducted at the Institution, and in the museum field. Stipend awards are available for interns to participate in supervised ongoing research, or museum-related activities for periods of ten weeks. Minority undergraduate and beginning graduate students are encouraged to apply. Students should contact the Office of Fellowships for application information.

Deadlines: February 1 (postmark) for Summer (starting June 1) or Fall (starting October 1) and October 1 (postmark) for Spring (starting February 1)

U. S. Department of Education—Jacob Javits Fellowship Program

The Jacob Javits Fellowship Program provides financial assistance to students who have demonstrated:

  • superior academic ability and achievement
  • exceptional promise;
  • financial need to undertake graduate study leading to a doctoral degree or a master's degree in which the master's degree is the terminal highest degree in the selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences

Subject to the availability of funds, a fellow receives the Javits fellowship annually for up to the lesser of 48 months or the completion of their degree. The fellowship consists of an institutional payment (accepted by the institution of higher education in lieu of all tuition and fees for the fellow) and a stipend (based on the fellow's financial need as determined by the measurements of the Federal Student Assistance Processing System. In fiscal year 2005, the institutuional payment was $11,822 and the maximum stipend was $30,000.

United States Hispanic Leadership Institute

Program Description: The 21st Century Leaders Internship is a ten (10) week program that promotes grassroots community organizing and leadership development in Chicago. The 21st Century Leaders Summer Internship Program will provide students with an opportunity to observe the dynamics of social change by working with community leaders and elected officials in their perspective areas to register voters. Also, students will learn how to develop valuable communication and organizational skills.
