Why Hispanic/Latino?
When the decision was being made to name this office, many things were taken into consideration. The name of this department had to be representative of our mission and the student population we serve.
According to Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary the term Latino refers to a native or inhabitant of Latin America or a person of Latin American origin residing in the U.S.. According to the same resource, the term Hispanic is defined as of, relating to, or being a person of Latin American descent living in the U.S.; especially: one of Cuban, Mexican, or Puerto Rican origin.
“Hispanic/Latino Student Affairs” was chosen in an attempt to encompass and embrace the student population we seek to serve. We realize that students may identify with a myriad of race, ethnic or cultural titles and hope that regardless of what they may call themselves, they can call us a resource and home away from home.
