University Residential Life
University Residential Life (URL) strives to encourage the growth and development of each student in a variety of living environments. Our program seeks to complement the academic mission of Northwestern University by providing students the opportunity to learn social responsibility, intercultural competence, and interpersonal skills in a safe, diverse, and affirming environment.
Adjudicating Violations of Rules in the Residence Halls
When a student appears to have violated a University rule or regulation in a residence hall, the behavior is confronted by a Community Assistant (CA), another Residence Life staff member, or University Police. The student will meet with an administrator to discuss his/her side of the story. If the student is found to be “not in violation,” then the complaint is dismissed. If the student is found “in violation,” then sanctions will be assigned accordingly and the incident will be noted in the student’s disciplinary file. In some cases, the incident may be referred to the University Hearing and Appeals System or the Sexual Assault Hearing and Appeals System.
Sanctions may include, but are not limited to:
- Verbal Warning
- Written Warning
- Restitution
- Loss of Privileges
- Educational Programs
- Housing Probation
- Disciplinary Probation
- Suspension
- Exclusion
