Dennis Chong is the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professor
of Political Science at Northwestern University. He specializes
in the study of American national politics and has written extensively
on political ideology, social norms, rationality, tolerance, and
collective action, among other topics.
Current Projects
Opinion Formation on Conservation and Growth. Chong
is currently studying, in collaboration with Yael Wolinsky of Political
Science, opinion formation in referendums and initiatives on conservation
and growth issues. They are exploring the effects of information
and framing on preferences, and the collection and use of public
opinion by interest groups in designing referendums and campaigning
for their passage.
Racial Expression and Group Consciousness. Chong
is also doing research on the changing status of racial expression
in the United States, focusing on contrasts between elite and mass
opinion, normative theories of controversial speech, and changing
attitudes toward racial speech. In another project, in collaboration
with Reuel Rogers of Political Science, Chong is analyzing the development
of racial and ethnic identity and consciousness and the influences
of social identities on political action.
His most recent book is Rational Lives: Norms and Values in
Politics and Society. Previously, he wrote Collective Action
and the Civil Rights Movement, which was named the "Best
Published Work" in 1990-92 by the Political Economy Section
of the American Political Science Association.
