Welcome to the website for Cells to Society (C2S): The Center on Social Disparities and Health at the Institute for Policy Research. Our mission is: (1) To bring together the social, life, and biomedical sciences to understand the origins, consequences, and policy solutions for contemporary health inequalities in the United States; and (2) to examine how broad social, race/ethnic and economic disparities"get under the skin" and affect human development and physical health.

Postdoctoral research fellowship opportunity at C2S

Greg Duncan elected president of PAA and SRCD
Economist Greg Duncan has been elected president of two different research societies. He will become president of the Population Association of America (PAA) in 2008 and president of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) in 2009.

Alberto Palloni joined Northwestern faculty this fall
Demographer Alberto Palloni joined C2S and the Department of Sociology on September 1, 2007. He is past president of the Population Association of America and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His research interests include the relationship between health and social stratification; models for the spread of HIV/AIDS; mathematical and statistical applications to demographic problems; mortality and fertility; and the relationship between population and development.

Jeremy Freese joined Northwestern faculty this fall
Jeremy Freese conducts research on various topics that seek to connect biological, psychological, and social processes, and he is especially interested in how such connections are altered by large-scale social or technological changes. He has published work that evaluates different prospective contributions of evolutionary psychological and behavioral genetics to social science. He is interested in policy innovations that emphasize individual informed choice--such as the Medicare prescription drug benefit--and whether and how such innovations may lead to differences in how much people benefit from these innovations.

Two C2S members recognized in the Northwestern University Research Annual Report 2007

Second annual Summer Biomarker Institute was a success

This year's Summer Institute focused again on salivary and blood spot biomarkers in addition to anthropometry, actigraphy, and ethics. The SBI Co-Directors also highlighted theoretical perspectives on the role of biology in the social sciences.
