Postdoctoral Fellowship at Northwestern University
One to two-year full-time research position with Thomas McDade, Emma K. Adam, Greg Duncan, P. Lindsay Chase-Lansdale, and Tom Cook, on their R01 grant “Social Influences on Young Adult Stress Biomarkers”. The project involves extensive secondary analyses of a large national dataset (the Add Health Study), examining associations between social contexts in adolescence and early adulthood and biological markers of stress and health, with the goal of identifying physiological pathways through which social relationships, neighborhood characteristics, and socioeconomic disparities are related to health outcomes.
The candidate will be working within Cells to Society: The Center on Social Disparities and Health (C2S; http://www.northwestern.edu/ipr/c2s/) in Northwestern University’s Institute for Policy Research (IPR). Requirements include a Ph.D. in psychology, human development, sociology, anthropology, economics, demography, or related field, and experience with large data sets and longitudinal analyses. Experience studying social inequality, the transition to adulthood, health disparities or stress-related biomarkers is highly desirable.
Fellows will acquire a variety of professional and research experiences from two primary job responsibilities: (1) Data management and (2) data analysis, presentation and write-up. Data management will include cleaning and organizing data from the Add Health study, and supervising graduate assistants on these activities. Data analysis and writing will involve setting up and running longitudinal models under the guidance of study investigators, and preparing presentations and manuscripts on study results. Fellows will become a central part of an interdisciplinary team, and contribute to a dynamic intellectual community by attending colloquia, conferences, and seminars associated with C2S and IPR. In addition to working on project-related papers, fellows will be allotted time to focus on their own ongoing research and writing projects.
To apply, send a cover letter stating research interests and related experiences, as well as curriculum vitae, relevant reprints or preprints, and names and contact information of three referees. Send materials to:
